Title: Currently playing thread
Post by: DocSavage on February 04, 2011, 09:55:34 PM
Arkham Asylum proves I suck at stealth, since I keep getting spotted by gun wielding thugs.  Usually while attempting a gliding kick takedown.

Fun game though.

The 3d mode is a nice novelty, but gives me a headache.

Is this 3D with traditional red/blue glasses or the new 3D?

I'm playing the following:

Fallout: New Vegas (Level 30, nothing to do really, have really slowed down playing this one)

SmackDown vs Raw 2011 (Love it, made a bunch of stables, waiting for DLC 3 before I pick it up again so it'll still be fresh when that hits)

Madden 10 (Picked it up for $10 with a gift card, acquired the Sex Cannon to the Raiders, he tore his hamstring so I have Jeff Garcia starting, try to play a game a night)

WCW/nWo Revenge (Got my N64 hooked up and played this the other day, still love this game)

I'm playing:

Darksiders (PC) - Geez, this game is LONG. Got about 12 hours into it right now.

Call of Duty 2 GOTY Edition (Xbox 360) - Still actually good.

Dante's Inferno (PS3) - Yes, I'm sorry too.

Forgot I recently started Red Dead Redemption. I'm real early and haven't been sucked in yet though. I do see the potential in it though.

That game took time for me to get into as well, but once you do, it doesn't let go.

EA Jobhunt 2011: Unemployment Edition. I haven't played any in the series since 1999. It isn't very good but I have the feeling I'll be playing it for a while.

And Black Ops

Good purchase.  I don't know for certain, but I believe they do allow unlimited redownloads should something like that happen.

Yeah, the XBL Marketplace remembers what you've downloaded, so you can get it again should you need to transfer to a new system, but I believe that can only be done once per year.

All that being said, you can only download it so long as it's offered on the marketplace, so don't count on it being available years from now. It might be, who knows, but just keep it in mind.

Went to Gamestop looking for Street Fighter IV, but walked away with Ninja Gaiden II for ten bucks instead.

Breezed through the first chapter on the first mode, which I presume is "easy", because I'm not seeing that mad challenge everyone raves about.  A little blocking and dodging and Flying Swallow spamming makes short work of most groups (And I can do allright even without the Flying Swallow spam).  Not really a complaint, and maybe I'm spoiled on PS2's God Hand, which is ungodly hard on easy mode while still being a lot of fun.  (I'm still disappointed in Freakshow for not having played it, or possibly even heard of it)

Got to say, lopping off limbs is mad fun.  This game is bloodier then God of War.

I just finished my first franchise season with the Oak-Land Rai-ders on Madden 10.  I was going to play as the Falcons (my team), but I really wanted to play as a team with crappy QBs so I could use Grossman.  I signed him to a free agent deal with the Raiders after I saw their QBs.  Gross Rexman was out for 10 weeks with a torn hamstring, but he came back and took the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory.  I won the Super Bowl with a 15-1 record and Jeff Garcia and Rex Grossman were my QBs ~REALISM!

I play on Pro, but I'm not great at these football games so I did have competitive games.  It's not like I steamrolled everyone by 5 TDs or anything.  I had 2 or 3 games I pulled out on last second FGs.

One of my favorite things that happened this season was when I was up by multiple scores against the Steelers.  I was going to kill the clock and took a knee.  The Steelers called a TO so I called a play action pass that went 60+ yds for a TD.  I beat them again in the conference title game as well.

Been playing a lot of Top Spin 3 since the Australian Open.  Had a created character, played Andy Murray who was in the finals this year, defeated him pretty easily though he kept running down shots, but my serve was very tough for him.

Never got the chance to God Hand it up, but it's on the List, fwiw.

And you should really be upping that difficulty level.  Play the game like it's meant to be played.

Started Ninja Gaiden Black and Bioshock.

On Ninja Gaiden:  Seems like a different game then II.  Despite being an Xbox game, the graphics actually look better because of the awesome set pieces.  The gameplay seems somewhat slower, but the enemies also block more and you feel more like you're using skill instead of hacking and slashing.

I'm loving it.

As for Bioshock, it's about what I expected:  System Shock II on steroids.

I'm still bouncing between Madden 10 and SVR 2011.

Madden 10: I play that on Pro because I'm not that good at football games no matter how much I play.  It seems next to impossible to run the ball, but I throw for 300+ yards per game.  At this point I don't even try to run the ball.  It's all passing, all the time.  I threw for 400+ yards and 6 TDs in my last game with the Raiders.  I have Rex Grossman as my QB.

SVR 2011:  Created a stable that is DDP and Booker T under masks.  That's been fun.  Love using the Nitro Arena.

War for Cybertron, Forza 3, and Fallout 3 are my current favorites.

Also, I still go back to Arkham Asylums challenge modes.  Trying to beat them and better your score is really addictive.  I actually prefer the fighting mechanics in that game over dedicated hack and slash/brawler games like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry..

Started a new play-through of Fallout: New Vegas.  Not playing as straight-up evil, but am willing to take Karma hits I wasn't in the past.  I've got a ton of game in front of me and it's kind of frustrating to go from all that awesome tech/perks/etc and to lose it and start over.  Still an engrossing game though.

Just started Kane and Lynch. Very early. So far it's not bad. for the price ($5 new. Ollies Outlet represent, yo) I'm gonna give it a go

Real gamers play http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=1289.0 (http://[url=http://[url=http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=1289.0)]

Kind of like Tempest 2000/3000, with updated graphics, and uses the Tempest 2k music themes.  The really cool thing about this version, is if you hit f5, instead of moving the claw around the wed, it makes the claw sit at the bottom of the screen, and moves the web around it (Which was supposed to be the original game mechanic, but was scrapped for fear of gamers getting motion sickness.  I don't think there's another Tempest game that implements web rotating.)

Played it before, but realized I never got it for my new system..  And than found out the creator's website is dead.  This is effectively the only link online that hosts the updated version.

Edit:  I wanted to embed a link in the word TEMPEST, but it didn't take.  The [url= format is how it's done on most boards.

HAH!  So it IS something with the way this board parses certain urls, since my example just worked.

Now lets try it again with my Tempest url:

Does it work? (http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=1289.0)

Edit:  Test:  http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=1289.0 (http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=1289.0)

Edit 2:  Ok, it looks like Beast is right and I made a mistake the first time..  But I'm also partially right, because after I posted, it turns it into a hyperlink, and adding the  tags in edit get turned a blue color as if it's part of that hyperlink..

Any way to disable that?  (If I could, I'd like to disable all autoformat "features"..  I'll even do the extra work for Youtube vids)... (http://)

edit:  lol, all I did this time is add an open url tag, and look what happens.

One open ended tag turns two lines into broken hyperlinks, and once again, you can't simply edit that out.. You need to delete the entire message.

Heh, no problem.  I wasn't expecting you to revamp the board code for one problem.

As long as this board doesn't (As a few other boards do) mess with urls that start in http://exampleexample (http://exampleexample)

Where after posting the url gets broken to pieces, with half the characters missing..

Just picked up Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, now that the price is down to around 20 dollars.  Played against a friend in India who I usually dominate at fighting games like Street Fighter 4, and lost about 10 straight.  I bet he was using Simple Mode, seeing he was spamming specials and supers non stop, when he can't even do a dragon punch in Street Fighter..  >_<

Between India and the US, there's about a half second input delay, give or take, so I just may use simple mode myself.  In fact, that control scheme might be ideal for laggy gameplay, and is the ONLY reason I'd use it...  (Not because I'm some elitist prick who thinks it's beneath him either, but more I'm used to using normal inputs, and simple mode cuts you off from a lot of moves...)

Finished up Gears 2 with a friend, and it was AWESOME.  Short, but felt like playing in an epic blockbuster action movie.

Going to wait on a pending price drop for Gears 3, so for now Fable 3 is shipping..  I know it gets sketchy reviews, but the Youtube vids make it look appealing, and for 8 dollars it's not really breaking the bank..  Plus, it's really one of the only decent co-op games for the 360.  You'd think there'd be tons of full co-op games, but the truth is there's not.  Most only have limited modes..

Just finished Far Cry 3. I've been on a great streak lately finishing games going back to Sleeping Dogs. Beat Dishonored after that, then Black Ops 2 then Far Cry 3. Every one of them were great games that I could really get into, I've been lucky recently.

It does look good from videos in action..  But I think I'll be picking up the DMC HD remake first, and maybe Bayonetta, in one swoop.  I actually own DMC 1 and 3, but never finished it, so may as well start from scratch on the HD ports, then trade up to DMC 5 later...

Retail outlets didn't have DMC hd collection, so I guess I'm stuck playing those on my old PS2 for now.

But I did pick up Bayonetta.  Once the Wii U sequel comes out, I figure the price will go up on the other console versions, if only a little bit, and once I'm done playing it Devil May Cry 5 should drop a bit more, so I'll get it then (Plus I really want to finish DMC 1 and 3 before playing 5, even though I realize 5 is a reboot.)
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

Bayonetta is ridiculously good.  I love all the classics, your Ninja Gaidens and GOW's, and DMC's except the new one I have not tried, but none of them have a religious witch assassin from hell dominatrix diva who can clear an entire room from a handstand while strafing the room with high heel handguns.  It's virtually a satire of action game tropes, yet the gameplay is so over the top, yet accessible, that you feel like a total baddass.

Just a thought:

I heard about this thing called Mamehub, that's basically this giant multi-emulator that you have to log in to, and it puts you in a room with all these other people.  And you can download games directly from them, and most importantly you can start multiplayer sessions with anyone in the room.  It works pretty decently.

Played some Marvel vs Capcom with six other people one time..  I don't normally use it, though, since in the end they're strangers, but if, say, someone here decided to try it..

So, still playing Bayonetta.  I had delusions of getting perfect scores on every level, and gave that dream up after about the eight restart..  Now I'm just not caring if I play like a scrub or not, and enjoying the experience.   ^_^;

And it is something.  I just cleared the train stage, and Bayonetta's hair became a giant dragon like thing and bit in half a giant berserker angel.  Games got God of War brutality in it, but the gameplay is more like Devil May Cry maybe..

And hells shopkeeper, who gives Bayonetta a new set of guns, kind of reminds of of Morpheus from The Matrix, if he was played by Samuel L. Jackson....

They petitioned the white house to get the game banned from shelves.  O_o

My bread and butter game has been Persona 4 lately.  But a friend got me a gift card to a new game shop in town called Game Xchange, or Game Change or something.  It has stuff for nearly every system ever made, all the way back to the Atari 2600 era, and I'm all for alternatives to Gamestop, so stopped by today.  Picked up Dead of Alive 3 for the Xbox, and Gottelieb collection for the PS2.

The pinball game is alright, but DOA3 is fantastic.  Even the visuals are impressive, considering it's a last gen game, with the somewhat choppy fmv's showing their age more then the graphics engine (And personally, I think the visuals from last gen to this gen are more of a bunny hop anyways, vs the giant leap from PS1 to PS2/Xbox.)

Only thing, is it seems you can't change settings in arcade mode.  Everythings 1 round, infinite time limit, and changing the settings only works for tag modes and other non story modes..  (Tag mode is especially fun.  Fast paced, and I'm actually enjoying it more then tag based games like Marvel vs Capcom at the moment..)

Played it some more, tonight.

Visually, it's kind of hard to believe the game came out in 2001.  The visuals must have been stunning back in the day.  Personally, I think they're pretty now.

Just started RE6 last night. Its visually amazing but its a little too quick-timey for me.

Open a door, cut scene, get attacked by something, wiggle the stick, press x, rinse repeat.

Only an hour or so in so we shall see...

Thinking about finishing the Hunting add-on for Borderlands 2 and then diving into the Tiny Tina mod.  Having a hard time keeping my attention on the game though.

Picked-up Asura's Wrath and it's like playing an Anime...commercial break bumpers and all.  Kind of neat as the scale of the battles are huge.

Far Cry 3 was pretty great, but I'm sick of the island life, so I guess Just Cause 2 will have to wait.

Finally got all the Spartan Ops episodes done on Legendary as well...but don't think I'll be coming back to Halo 4 for awhile as the rewards for regular multiplayer suck.

I just spent about an hour and a half, give or take, trying to unlock "tough little ship" to later unlock the Red Tail, and every time the RNG was against me, so I know what you mean.  ^_^

In general though, you just have to be smart with the upgrades/mods, and you'll usually do ok..  No shame in playing on easy mode for the extra scrap either, imo.

I have the Red Tail actually. I only have the Kestrel, Red Tail, and the Engi ship in my game.  Don't play often though so could have more.

I'm currently in Borderlands on PC looking to do the Mad Moxxi shit while I'm still level 41 and all my friends are level capped with pimp ass weapons to make it easier XD.  While waiting to set that up I'm probably going to start a FFVII play through now that I have the PC version and never finished the play through I started a few years back

LOL when Skyrim was announced some of their initial announcements were that they were working on making the UI smoother and easier to use than the Oblivion UI.  They did but it's still kinda clunky to use on a PC as the UI for Skyrim was based around Console controls.  There are mods that make the Skyrim UI even better for PC and amazing.  Same goes for Oblivion.

As for graphics in Oblivion....stop trolling.

I mentioned Mamehub not that long ago for playing older games online.  It was ok, but a little bit laggy..  Just tried another program called ggpo, which is supposed to be about as lag free as possible.

Now, one of the guys I play with lives in India (Old friend from my college days), and we tested KOF97.  Normally, we have pings between us of 400-600, which translates into at least a half second to a full seconds input lag.  That wasn't a problem here..  I'm 100% sure a no life pro gamer would find some amounts of unacceptable lag, but they play within some ridiculous standard where you have to nail a single frame out of 60 frames to nail a move..  For my purposes, play seemed smoother as anything.  Damned near perfect.

So yeah, 1990's/early 2000's fighters is what I'm playing now.

Although the last few offerings of Sleeping Dogs and Lara Croft and the Guardians of Light were good (The former I've played for the past week, and now I'm nearly bored of it and want to trade up to Saints Row 3/4 or GTA 5, and the latter I've tried and it's very good..)

Mains?

I usually roll with Zero/Dante/Virgil, but I'll play either Avengers (Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man), or Iron Fist/Nova/whatever, but usually Doom for fun.

I think I'm an alright player for your run of the mill online type, but if you're a serious player I guess you'd beat me pretty bad, because I'm too lazy to devote a ton of time into being good.

I'm ok in all honesty, I'm not as hardcore into it as I was used to be.  If I played online now, I'd probably get killed, back then, I did ok, usually about a .650-.750 winning percentage.

My main guys are Ryu/Dante and either Captain America, Thor or Hulk.  I love hitting Final Justice, especially at the end, when MvC 2 was at the arcade, I would yell BOOM after Cap would throw the opponent up and bring him down.  Love it.  I used to use Mega Man a lot and spam the hell out of some folks, a buddy of mine figured out my pattern so I had to master Venom to counter his counter.

Good times.

Plus, it now takes 1,800,000 points in five minutes just so I can unlock the damned classic skin arcade skin. Only about 10 percent of over 200,000 players on the leaderboard come anywhere near it.  (My best is 1,400,000 on Spiral, and that's still barely top 20 percent.)

Went back to FTL ever since the Advanced Edition expansion.  Hacking and mind control are a lot of fun to use, flack weapons and he gatling gun are overpowered as hell, and and the Crystal Cruiser becomes easier to unlock provided you have the Rock Ship C layout unlocked, which gives a crystal crew member.

The logic behind no cross play multi between systems is basically to encourage someone into buying into the system all their friends are playing on, right?

But on the flip side, it's also encouraging people into ditching your system for the one their friends are playing on.  Having three versions of Street Fighter that can't play together is kind of stupid, imo.

Anyways, started playing more Street ever since the Ultra upgrade.  One of the new guys kind of reminds me of Andre the Giant..
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

That's not the only reason but is one.  There is issues with programming differences between the consoles and PC on how the servers and games run.  Also for some games it would be completely unfair in the cross platform scene as there are control advantages on one platform over another
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

Supposedly, Microsoft set up a test run of the best fps console gamers against mediocre PC gamers, and the console players were destroyed.

Fighting games are one of the few genre's that wouldn't benefit from a keyboard and mouse, though.  Arcade sticks are the only real peripheral advantage, and even those aren't a make it or break it difference maker..
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

Buddy started playing Tera:Rising recently.  I love MMO's but outside XIV and EVE I've been tired of them lately.  Was a hardcore WoW raider all the way from Vanilla through WotLK but I had to quit as the game had changed so much and not for the better IMO.  Don't have the money to pay for a subscription at the moment and Tera is free.  Looked up it's free model and you don't actually seem to lose out on anything for playing for free.   It's pretty cool.  It's actually active combat so if you want to dodge an attack you just move as opposed to relying on an arbitrary stat

Been playing a game I got from the Android app store I was interested in buying from the Amazon market, and since finding out it's free for Android and I device users, figured I'd give it a try on my 4 inch phone instead of on my Kindle (Which is also an older version of the app)..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn8_QwGVhcA

Basically, it's Privateer.  Same exact concept.

It's fun, even despite the touch controls being a bit hard to manage on a 4 inch.  No idea why this went free to play, but as far as I can see it's not bogged down by the IAP model..  You can pretty much make do with grinding it out for in game cash, and it never feels like a chore to do it.  (I mean, grinding it out is the entire appeal of Privateer..  Pay real dollars to get the best stuff, and there's no point in playing anymore.)

My party quit when we couldn't enter each other's instances.  Also, even when everything worked, there were plenty of times you couldn't see cut scenes or conversations, and ended up sitting around twiddling your thumbs, waiting on a team mate.

I think you could, but only one character's story at a time gets instanced.

Basically, in our case, if I was a jedi knight, I could invite other people into my party, which would allow them into instances specific to my characters storyline.  Usually, they'd get to spectate conversations, so they could follow my story, but there's times when they're not able to see what I'm seeing, and so can't follow the entire story.

The game breaking part came when, even in my party, they simply weren't going into my instance at all, and vice versa.

A neat little thing I found out you could do on a tablet or phone:

It's fun.  Reloadings a pain and it's nowhere near as accurate as using a light gun, but still a neat novelty.

 :diablo_mini:

Ok, I was thinking besides the 8 and 16 bit eras.  Sonics been a train wreck since Adventure, and Mario's made some good 3d games and all, but mediocre classic side scrollers.

So, Rayman is definitely the best 2d style sidescroller in recent memory, at least.

Just perfected Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning.  Everything that can be done in the game is finished and have all 61 achievements.  Only thing I didn't do was build the best gear but that is unnecessary since the game is so easy even on hard and is just time consuming crafting and salvaging over and over and over...took a total of 123 hours 1 minute and 10 seconds.  Game is not as large as I thought it was.

Picked up Namco Museum, mostly for Super Pacman and Championship Edition C.E.

Wow, C.E. is kind of meh after you've played the DX versions.
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: DocSavage on December 08, 2014, 04:07:12 PM
I meant Pacman Museum, not Namco.

After some more playing, my opinion has changed from "meh" to "different".

Basically, vanilla championship edition is like classic pac man, where you're always on the run from ghosts, while in DX+ they're never really a threat because of slow-mo and bombs.  So the challenge isn't survival, but racking up points.

Makes for a much faster paced game, but tbh vanilla C.E. is more of a proper pacman game.  C.E. is Forza, and DX+ is Burnout.

Anyways, besides C.E., the Pacman collection has an Arrangement game from the psp which is worth the price of admission alone.  Really fun to play.

Of course, I could have just emulated the rest of the older games, but the leaderboards are worth paying into, imo, plus achievements give you some goals and keep the games from getting stale (And there are over 72 of these things.  Only like 3 people completed them.)

I keep going back to God Hand on my trusty old PS2.  This is pretty much PS2's "Nintendo hard" Dark Souls, just like Ninja Gaiden Black was for the Xbox.

Too bad they'll never make a sequel.  Or even hd it up for modern consoles (I'd guess the PS3 buffs it up a bit though.)

Thanks to a friend from YouJustGotFragged.com I got Resogun for the PS3.  I'm so glad I waited.  I guess it just came out for the PS3 in December, got it on a Flash sale for only $3.  If I had known before the sale it was available on the PS3 I would've paid full price.  Well worth it.  This is definitely the game I wanted since Ikaruga, a fun, challenging space shooter.  My goodness the game is hard, but it's beautiful and challenging.

Picked up Dungeon Siege 3 cheap for the coop.

Fun game, if you don't mind basically helping the host do their campaign, because everythings saved server side.  It's different then a Diablo clone, and almost plays like a hybrid beat em up, with a block button and dodging being important, along with special attack meters you build up from normal attacks.

Been getting into Skyrim, with the Dawnguard, Dragonborne, and Heathfire dlc's.

Rolled a Breton intending to go mage.  Bought a flame atronach and planned on getting and leveling soul trap, and ended up spending most of my time leveling sneak by attacking Companions at Whiterun.  😅

Now I'm toying with the idea of just being a sneak assassin archer and using summons as distractions, and already sank perks into the stealth tree that gives damage bonuses go archers.

I hear this is the absolute worst build for dealing with dragons, though, and am on the fence about it.  And destruction is supposed to be good at area control and stunlocking everything, even dragons and bosses..

Are you playing PC or Console version?  If Console you'll be fine.  Archery tree gets a talent that has every shot have about a 75% chance to stagger the target.  Not to mention dragons are fucking jokes.

If PC I got a shit ton of great mod recommendations for ya so you can get a "proper" and "full" game experience.  One of which involves dragons that are actually fucking dangerous.

BTW, every time I play I always try to play something different but always go back to the assassin/rogue/archer of doom.  Just so much fun

EDIT:  In the vanilla version of the game Destruction Magic is worthless.  It does scale up properly as the damage doesn't actually increase with your skill level like all other offensive trees.  Only worthwhile magic in Vanilla is Restoration, Alteration, and Illusion.

Nah, I'm using the console version.  Thanks anyways.

I'm playing on expert.  Does it matter if I bump it up to master or legendary, or are dragons a joke no matter what?
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: RealMarchHare on March 24, 2015, 04:38:19 PM
If you go to Master or Legendary EVERYTHING will fuck your shit up.  What most people who play on those difficulties do at first is save their level ups.  Reason being is whenever you choose to level and distribute your health/mana/stamina increase it fully heals you.  So you use it when you need to heal XD

Since your on console I'd say go your assassin archer.  Forget Destro magic.  It just doesn't really help much
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: DocSavage on March 26, 2015, 11:17:57 AM
I'll stick to expert, then.

It sounds like Skyrim handles difficulty the lazy man's way anyways.  No AI tweaks, just straight stat increases so an enemy takes one health damage per attack, while one or two shotting you.  That's not fun, that's tedious.

I'll stick to Dark Souls for when I want a challenge.

Dark Souls is growing on me.  Stripping my gear to make me as light as possible while hefting the Zweihander and beating a black knight to death after too many failed attempts, and then moving on to knocking a boss off a bridge, was pretty satisfying.

I usually go with medium/light armor, longsword, and heater shield with a bow and arrow backup, but I may have to invest in stats for ultra greatswords and like heavy weapons...  Maybe start with investing to use the black knight sword..
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: RealMarchHare on April 14, 2015, 03:19:26 AM
UGH!! Ok, uh, hmmm, well first before you start you kinda need to know what kinda character you wanna be.  Personally I like Fast/Ninja flip dodging with a good 2Hander like the Claymore or Uchigatana.  ALWAYS invest in Pyromancy as the only stat it needs is Attunement for the spell slots.  Just 3 or 4 should be enough to use the good ones.  Shields get a 95%+ block shield that's light. I personally prefer the grass crest because it gives Stam Regen and you can put it in your off hand then 2Hand a weapon so it's on your back but still get the regen.  If you NEED to block for some reason 95% is more than enough.  You'd be surprised how little your health actually moves from the 5% that gets through.

Ranged if you aren't going Dex get a crossbow.  If you put points into Dex it depends on your strength and equip rate which bow to use.

THIS IS THE GREATEST TOOL IN YOUR ARSENAL:

http://mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/

Furether questions just ask.  I love this series and always willing to help people get into it.  If you're playing on PC or 360 I can even make a character to help ya out if you need it.

Hmm, well I already worked my strength up to 17, so hope I didn't hopelessly lock myself into one path already...  (Not sure I want to ever use my Great Demons Hammer or not). I just got to the fog gate past the Hellgate Dragon, and from what i hear SL 16 is kind of high for this part of the game.

They say elemental weapons were nerfed on the PC.  Did the consoles get the same patch?  Is a lightning Zweihander a bad idea?
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: RealMarchHare on April 14, 2015, 03:27:11 PM
Soul Level 16 is right about where you should be for that area.  PC and Consoles all run the same patches.  They were nerfed but only for balance.  Need to remember that in the Souls series if something gets nerfed it doesn't make it worthless, just brings it in line with everything else.  Lightening Zwei is REALLY good.  Lots of people run that.  That or a Lightening Claymore if you want something lighter but still hits hard.  If you are going to go elemental then only get your STR/DEX to where they need to be to use the weapon as when they are turned elemental they lose their stat scaling.  For the STR requirement you need to decide if you want to use the weapon 1Handed or not.  If you don't ever plan on using a weapon 1handed you don't need to raise your STR to the listed amount on the weapon.  When you 2Hand a weapon it increases your STR stat by 1.5 times.  So for the Zweihander you'd need a STR 16.

Having 17 STR isn't bad.  Opens a lot of weapon options up to you without much of an investment.  Will allow you to 2Hand most weapons as well.

I would not suggest the Demon's Great Hammer.  It's more a novelty weapon.  While EVERY WEAPON is viable for PvE not all are really that good for PvP.  That would be one of them.  Even if you don't plan on doing a lot of PvP it's going to happen to you so remaining somewhat viable for it is suggested.  Plus the investment necessary to be able to use it is atrocious (31 STR to 2hand the sucker and if you're going elemental that is WAY to high and much of an investment).

Really I need to know what kind of character you wish to play and I can prolly stat something out for ya or point ya in the right directions

Zwei is a great weapon.  I personally don't use it but it is phenomenal.  Either go Lightening or Chaos Zwei or Normal.  Decide early as depending on which you do depends on how you should allocate stats.

Don't worry about upgrading armor right now.  Wait until you have pretty much all the armors and your equip load where you want it so you can figure out which armor works best for you.  Alternatively, go the Fashion Souls route and don't give a fuck about armor defensively and where whatever you like the look of that's within your desired equip load.  Once you know what armor you want to wear THEN upgrade it.  Early game just make sure your weapons you use regularly are up to date

I'm really loving both the Zwei and the Claymore..  Claymore for those times when I need to go one handed and carry a shield.  Got both up to reinforcement level 4.  Maybe a waste if I decide not to stick with them, but Titanite is easy to get.

The gargoyals are giving me hell no matter what I use at the moment though.  Main sticking point, the greatswords use a LOT of stamina, so dodge juggling defense and offense isn't easy.  May have to upgrade my stamina..

So, what type did you play, and how did it work for you?

Been exploring around the Darkroot basin and the garden.  Rock knights, crystal golems, and a black knight, oh my.

Hey, how do we coop anyway?  I thought summons went out randomly on a first come, first serve basis.  I've only tried it once for the bell gargoyles, and that's how it seemed to work.
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: RealMarchHare on April 21, 2015, 11:54:27 PM
So it does work that way but it has an odd twist to it.

The first time we want to co-op it might take a bit for our sign to show up for the other player.  However, once we successfully co-op once it becomes quicker and easier to co-op again.

Dark Souls 2 handles it better by giving a ring you can equip where you choose a god and it puts you on a server for that god so you can meet people almost instantaneously who is also wearing the ring with the same god chosen.

I see.

Well, I'm sitting on one two humanity and two more, so I'll try and work my sl up to the 20's tonight.

Before I start leveling, have you tried a dex build?  I got the Balder Side Sword not too long ago, and I'm debating whether to stick with my plan of relying on the greatswords or not.  Greatswords do a to of damage at little investment, but they kill the stamina...  And I'm thinking the dex route has the added bonus of buffing my new long bow  (And maybe crossbow?  Not sure if crossbows work off dex or not..)

At level 17 now, with strength at 18, dex at 14.  Guess I'll go for quality or strength, rather then switch gears and pump up dex exclusively now.

Farming drakes at the moment.  1000 souls a pop, which would make a cool 4k a run if I wasn't having so much trouble taking on the two drakes across that bridge.

Also picked up the grass crest shield you mentioned.  It is sweet, between how light it is and the endurance buff.

Yea and at 95% physical block rate it still is extremely useful if you need to block something with the shield.

If you're going to go quality build I suggest sticking with the Claymore as you'll benefit more from investing in both STR and DEX.  If you go STR find the biggest hardest hitting motherfucker you can find, like your Zwei :D

I really do like the Claymores stabbity stab r2.  Decided to skip the Bast because it lacks it.

Been killing all my bosses and mini bosses with the Zwei though.  The staggering helps.

Bastard Sword is backwards in this game. It ends up with 10 more AR than the Claymore despite being purchasable and the fact a Claymore IRL would be more powerful.  The 10AR advantage it has though isn't worth it's worse moveset.

Don't get to use to Staggering bosses.  Later they have some nasty poise.  You can still break it but the stam and time investment will likely put you in more danger than you need to be in.

http://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/27fhxn/dark_souls_gwg_patch_issue_megathread

Not finding any more info on this problem.

I bought the game well before the free edition, so hopefully it's up to date.  It has the bottomless box, and the resonance rings, and I believe the last patch came out in 2012 or early '13.

Guess we'll see when we try cooping.

Was planning on deleting/moving the update to play original Souls in it's unbalanced, harder glory, but not risking it now.

That issue is resolved.  When they gave it away through GwG that's how I ended up with it in on my 360 because I already had it on PC.  Roommate wanted to play through it and got it for free.  Even though DS at the time used GFWL on PC it still wasn't cross compatible so I just picked it up again. It took them like, 2 months, to fix the issue but it was fixed XD

Fired up Geo Wars Dimensions for a go at adventure mode, and see they released an expansion.  Basically a harder quest mode, and a "purist" mode for leaderboard hunters where you don't get drones, but the thing I especially like is the addition of "retro evolved" mode, where you don't bother with the green things and just blow stuff up.

Got King of Fighters 13 for the PS3. Much improved over 12, that one was a glorified demo. This one, much more complete, a storyline throughout the tournament. I like the personalized interactions between the fighters. Every fighter has a reason for being in the tournament, but none are focused on as there's a central storyline going on. Minor complaint, not effecting my overall enjoyment of the game itself. And graphically, beautiful.

Marvel Puzzle Quest has an iap hook right out of the 1990's gold foil 1st issue special edition boom years.

Give you limited space, keep throwing "ultra rare" heroes at you, encourage you to "bank" the heroes in your limited roster on the gamble that they're become valuble someday (Through more cards of the same character, which is the only way to unlock powers and level them up), and make you either grind for the iap currency trying to recruit new characters before their covers expire, or pony up money.

It's pretty standard fare in freemium games, granted, but I can't help but feel like I played this game back in the day.  :)

I agree the controls are a little... off. It's not obvious all the time and I've actually seen one instance where the screen tells you to press and hold X but you're actually supposed to hit A.

The storylines do it for me though. It's that good where I can forgive some of the technical issues. I really like their "choose your own adventure" model.

I LOVE the original game.  Yeah, it's very simple, but that's part of the appeal.  Just enough interactivity to feel like you're involved more then a tv program.

The sequels hit and miss, imo, but still worth playing.

Wolf Among Us might bs their best title, though.  It's what got me into reading Fables.

Been tooling around in Devastations challenge mode.  Some of them are insanely hard, and some are pretty fun.  The one where you take on clones of autobots is my favorite, because I get to role play Grimlock going on a rampage, just like in the toon.   :)

Mission 50 makes for easy loot farming.  It puts you in a turret against a shooting gallery of one hit kill Insecticons, and only lasts about a minute.  SS rank is pretty much a sure thing.

Title: Re: Currently playing thread

Mission 14,  with the Autobot clones, is giving me a ton of S class weapons. And I'm only on Commander difficulty.  And haven't even cleared it, yet, I simply quit to the Ark after a few losses.

Guess because you're essentially taking on five boss fights in a row, the loot really adds up.  You get more bang for your buck losing and quitting, then winning most other missions.

Black Flag isn't bad.  Kind of reminds me of the Tomb Raider reboot, only more open worldy with lots of other things to do.  And the ship battles are pretty fun.

Why do people hate this series?  Is Black Flag the only good one or something?
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: RealMarchHare on December 13, 2015, 02:44:41 PM
The first is good but can be a bit repetitive.  Has a lot of filler stuff to with hunting down an ungodly amount of flags and templars.

The second is amazing.  It fixed everything wrong with the first and introduced whole new concepts that are now mainstays.

The first "x-pack" for the second, Brotherhood, is also really good.  For taking place in only one city that city is HUGE.  Helps expand upon that story arc in a fantastic way as well and again introduces a lot of cool new concepts and fixes how easy it was to make money in 2.

The second "x-pack" for the second game, Revelations, I haven't played.  Actually haven't played one since Brotherhood.  Rather than just using what they've established they changed a lot of the working formula by adding a bunch of tedious micro-managing tasks and apparently the story wasn't as strong.

The third is just shit.  I don't know anybody who liked it.  This was the start of Ubisoft being a company that just puts out broken glitched games.  Didn't help that they took an amazing setting and just mishandled the entire story from all reports.  Has a strong start but then fucks it by changing the protagonist putting you in charge of somebody nowhere near as cool as who you spent the first, hour I think, with.

Then came the fourth, Black Flag, which is constantly considered in contention with 2 for being the best.  They went back to basics and really worked on the cool new features so they didn't seem tacked on and tedious.

Next was Unity which *snicker* we all know that story.

The newest one, Syndicate, is doing well so far.  Not as glitch ridden as some of the other new titles and has some good new mechanics.  Haven't really heard anything other than that though.  It might be an amazing game but I think people are getting tired of a new Assassin's Creed game every year now and the over arcing story is getting dragged out.  Doesn't help that they are building a rep for releasing unpolished unfinished games either.

There have been side games for pretty much every title so really there's about 2 games being released a year now.  The early side titles were pretty poor but some of the newer ones are apparently good.  Problem is they tend to be on a device that nobody uses, like the Vita, so not many play them.  They also don't really tie into the main series games

Dusted off the old Armored Core collection.  PSX era AC and AC: Project Phantasma, and PS2 AC 2 and AC3: Silent Line.

They were made by the makers of Dark Souls.  Every bit as great in the gameplay, but I think the robot aspect turned people away.  Me, I was looked at the parts as a means to an end, and not as THE point, like many reviews suggested.

Finally figured out how to cheap the AI in Project Phantasma's arena mode.  Cave stage prevents jumping, then circle strafe and spam the rifle.  :)

Budokai 3 is often said to be the best one, but I figured they really meant "for a dbz game".  But it's actually not half bad.

I don't know how it stacks up against "serious" fighters, but it's fun like Mortal Kombat's fun.  The game really capture's the look/feel of the show, and it plays well enough.  Also has a ton of content, which is good since it lacks online play..

I'm kinda done with Destiny now unless I'm raiding (anyone want to set up a raid party?) so I've been attacking my digital pile of shame to play some of these other games I've been ignoring.

Unravel - awesome puzzle platformer. It's a nice change of pace from Destiny and sports games. One character traversing through the world of a person's memories, solving physics puzzles to complete levels. Really fun. Just finished it.

NHL 16 - playing the Be A Pro mode. My player is kicking all kinds of ass, but there's a huge disparity in the difficulty levels. Rookie is too easy, Pro is somewhat challenging and not a lot of fun. There should be a middle ground. I'm about 30 games through my regular season.

Valiant Hearts - war time side scroller where you have to solve puzzles to progress through the levels. Tells the story of the attempted Nazi take over in the world war and the forces fighting against them.

Tried a few shumps on my phone, just to see how they play.  Games like 1945, or Japanese manic shooters..

Have to admit, they've refined the controls as much as possible to touch devices.  Basically, all you do is move the ship, as it fires off automatically.  Special moves are an icon press, and better yet the phone slows to a bullet time like crawl, or stops completely, if you take your finger off the screen.

Yeah, it's all very well done for phones.

And I'd never spend a dime on them.  I've decided mobile devices are simply unsuitable for action oriented games..  It's either dodgy touch controls/tilt controls, or in the cases they're spot on, your wrist aches from the unnatural positions.  No substitute for a gamepad or joystick.

But at least I only played free apps (Except Need for Speed, which was a dollar sale.)  I can't imagine spending 10 dollars on Geometry Wars Dimensions for mobile, what a nightmare that would be to play..
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: DocSavage on March 13, 2016, 07:03:19 PM
Revising my opinion:  The best apps are pretty playable as long as you keep your finger near the bottom of the screen, off the fighter.

Strikers 1999 is pretty close to spot on perfect, control wise.  Addictive, too.

Second favorite game, Squadron, has less precise controls, but neat design and a cool gimmick where you switch between four ships on the fly, with unique abilities (High damage narrow beam, weaker wide beam, super weak lock on laser, and slow moving spinning thing that clear bullets).

It's fun, but if you only tried one vertical shooter I can't recommend the former highly enough.

Edit:  These sorts of games actually seem to play easier on a small-mid sized phone, and worst on a tablet.  It s anti intuitive, but larger screens have too muchz surface area for touch/swipe based movement.

And your finger won't cover the action, thanks to a design trick where the ship doesn't follow your finger precisely.  Instead, the screen reacts to where you place your finger as the "center" of the control stick.  Meaning, you can keep your finger well under the ship, and control the direction, even if it means swiping your finger into various icons and such, provided your starting location is on free ground.

Best phone apps ever, these shumps.  MUCH better then endless runners or stupid puzzle games like Candy Crush..

Now into The Division. I'm only a few hours in but the game looks and plays awesome. The cover system is really well done so strategy definitely plays into how you complete the missions, it's not just run and gun everywhere. Looking forward to getting into it more.

Bouncing between WWE 2K16 and Fallout 4 on the PS4. Actually dusted off MLB 2K12 for the PS3.  I hate that they discontinued that series. I liked it better than The Show last time I compared demos.  BTW, if the computer hits a homer off of me the very next guy is taking one in the ear hole.  That's how it has to be.

Picked up Mass Effect 2 and 3, intending to binge through the entire series.

Was in the mood for sci fi, and it was between this and Fallout 3.

All the complaining about the ending, along with the usual EA bitching, nearly turned me off the franchise, but then I thought:  Everyone complained about Galactica's ending, too.  Would have missed out on one of the best sci fi shows ever made, if I went by those types of critics..

Smart move.  The ending actually isn't terrible and only seems that way if you don't really pay attention to the ENTIRE story from the first through to the last.  The only bad part was some information seemed to be missing.  They released a patch that added more content to explain a few gaps in time that happen during the ending.

Do you have the DLC for the games btw?  If not I highly suggest getting them.  There are a lot but almost all are extremely enjoyable and add a lot of cool new weapons and armor.  Don't bother with the equipment or weapon packs though.  Not really that useful :/

Haven't bought any dlc yet.  Does it kick in on the first playthrough, or subsequents?

I'll probably skip out on ME1's dlc..  Tbh, I'm looking forward to leaving the Mako behind in the sequels.  Good story, good characterization, but those driving scenes grind everything to a halt..

Not sure if I'll get "all" the dlc, though..  Have to look into it some more, see what looks appealing.

Citidal is a must own, as is Arrival.  Lost Memories, I'll probably get.

I only hope I can access Cerebus Network..  It's supposed to be free with new versions of ME2, but with my luck it needs a code which wasn't included/already used in my used copy..

For ME1 Bringing Down the Sky DLC isn't necessary story wise but fun.  Does carry a bit to ME2 and ME3.  Introduces you to the Batarians outside the codex entries too.  THe other DLC is only good if you want to character max (which takes three play throughs anyways).  It has very little effect on ME2 or ME3.

DLC wise for ME2 and ME3 skip the weapon and skins only DLC's.  Not necessary.  All the rest are really good in my opinion. Wasn't really disappointed by any of them.  A few don't have much impact on the story (I mean they do but kinda minor) where as others are a HUGE impact and you miss side missions in ME3 if you don't do them in ME2.

The Cerberus Network is a code so if you  bought it used you will need to purchase the Cerberus Network yourself.  It's only $5 I think and you get A LOT for that $5 so worth it.

EDIT:  Oh yea and fuck the Mako.  Never liked it and pads that game out so much if you do every planet exploration as it's so hard to control thus exploring planets(especially mountainous ones) a real chore.  You get the Firewalker for ME2 w/ The Cerberus Network and I think even for a mission or two in ME3 as well
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

I'm in luck, I just unlocked Cerebus Network with my activation code.

Looks like it's mostly a browser for dlc, though.  Don't see any free dlc there, it's all paid dlc..  Could have downloaded them from the Live store, right?

Edit:  Scratch that, the Normady Crash Site and Firewalker Pack are free.  You're right, there s plenty of gimmie's here.   :)

They have Genesis???  That's supposed to be for when Sony owners didn't have Mass Effect 1, what do we need that for?

Also, looking at the Xbox Marketplace, much of the dlc can't be bought from there.  Makes sense, if you're selling your own browser...

I see Cerberus Network is free now, so I'd have been set even without the code.

That's cool that the Cerberus Network is free now.  Means one of the DLC characters, Zaeed, is free.  The point of Genesis is a lot of people didn't want to sludge through ME1 (mainly due to the mako shit and massive change in combat) when starting new character's so they released it to PC and 360 to save them the hassle.  Doesn't allow a detailed world build as it only covers the major plot points.  Lot of side quest shit in ME1 carries over in a big ways :/

Popped in ME3 just to check out the dlc.

Almost choked on my cough drop at some of the prices.  Citadel and Omega are 15 bucks each!

I guess I wasted about as much on stupid stuff, but goddamn, Bioware really knows how to nickle and dime.  Might end up just getting Citadel, Kasumi, and Shadow Broker (And Bring Down the Sky.  What's one more dollar?) and calling it a day..  Can always buy more for another run.

Those are good ones.  Honestly get Leviathan and From Ashes for ME3.  They're both kinda important.  Citadel is fun but unnecessary.  Really just there for nostalgia and fan service (Seriously though it's a shit ton of fun)

Anyways, speaking of added content in games, Geometry Wars 3 might be the best bang for your buck ever.  I spent 15 bucks on it some time back, and they keep filling it out with content, all at no extra cost.

They just added a "Classic" mode on to their retro library, for example.  It gives you the exact same gameplay as Geo Wars 1, in addition to Geo Wars 2 gameplay.  Plus, their Adventure mode was topped off by TWO additional forks, with one adding a greater challenge, and another taking away all power ups.  (And the enemies are much faster and more aggressive, due to being designed with power ups in mind.  But the fans demanded a vanilla mode so scores could be compared fairly, and they got it.)

Went to shmups.system11 to see what they thought of Geometry Wars Dimensions.  They usually know their stuff, being enthusiasts and all, but there was some puzzling criticisms of the franchise (One guy claimed Robotron X is better because rescusing families adds a risk/reward factor.  And what does he think is the point of collecting multiplier increasing geom's..?)

This about sums up my thoughts:
Quote
There are a lot of incredibly crappy Western-made shooters, but this disregard for Geometry Wars is killing me. Geo Wars 1 and 2 are *incredible*. A lot of the times Western shooters just don't get it, but those two games do, probably precisely because they come from a Western heritage.

And no style or substance? I don't know what eyes you have, but I don't want them. - Special World

I just found out ps2 Shadow of Colossus not only supports progressive scan, but it's widescreen mode looks like an actual widescreen mode, instead of the faux implementation where they crop the sides and basically give you a "zoom mode".

Time to replay that, after finishing Up Your Arsenal (Yes, the Ratchet and Clank trailer is why I dug it up :) )
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

With no Gotham last night, ended up marathaning Up Your Arsenal.  The sewer crystal run and Annihilation Nation took forever, but now all I have left is finding all the titanium bolts..

But I'm not doing that any time soon, that's for sure.  Those PS2 face buttons are far stiffer then I remember.  You know how Xbox shoulder buttons are so stiff they start to hurt if played for more then an hour?  Pretty much the entire PS2 controller is like that, including the analog sticks.

And then I crack open PS2 Metal Slug Anthology.  :)

Got this as a gift years ago.  Every Metal Slug up to 6.  These games are awesome, no question about it.  And they don't look bad on an lcd, stretched out to 16:9 (Some games do ok with stretch, some don't.  These one's do).

Yeah, good games, but not enough to justify what Live Arcade pays for their stand alone versions (I don't think they even upgraded the visuals on those).

Forgot how much of a quarter sucker these games are.

Tbh, Contra will always be a better series, simply because it's not blatantly unfair.  Projectiles all over the screen, 20 soldiers, two tanks, a helicopter AT ONCE..  Yeah, anyone who one CC's a Metal Slug needs some combination of many, many hours and god like skill..

You just as well get ICO/SOTC HD Collection for PS3, it's a great collection and the HD remasters are wonderful.

Been going through the Sega Genesis Collection.  The games I'm most interested in are Phantasy Star 4 and Sonic 2, and wouldn't you know it, they have emulation issues.  Just minor stuff, like the battle theme still running when the victory theme plays, or the music not speeding up in Sonic when you get the boots, but it still makes me rethink my "no more stealing" policy and want to look into emulators again, since they do a good job.

And people condemn piracy..  Yeah, maybe if the commercial products actually had the same level of effort behind them hobbiest's do.  Nintendo seems to get it, all their emulations are flawless (If expensive).

The drawback is even if there are 360 games backwards compatible on Xbox One, they seem to suffer from framerate/performance issues.

Not excusing Sony's behavior...although it doesn't really bother me because I still use my PS3. I may get another PS3 soon as a 'backup'/trophy boosting system.

Strider is AWESOME!

You know thaf Bionic Commando remake?  Good game, right?  This is better, imo.  Sort of a mix of Strider and Shadow Complex.

Ironically, the metroidvania aspects get the most complaints.  But that's the retro community for you...  They see the name Strider, and automatically go OCD about how it's not like the arcade version, like the term name has to he attached to a remake instead of anything new (And for my money, NES Strider was way more fun then arcade, and it had Metroid elements in it, too).

Looks like Battleheart is released for free, and up to date.

I paid money for my copy years back, and thought it was fun.  But the dev decided to snub the Android market and only update the IOS version.  Claimed the money wasn't there, and it was too much effort to build an updated version for Android.  So, he dropped all support.

Fair enough, you buy the product as is, and not factoring in updates.  Sort of like how PC gets expansions for free in certain ports, ala Dark Souls.

But now, they banked on Battleheart 2 selling, so gave away the first.  And I'm happy enough to try and and compare it to my copy.

But I'm certainly not going to sink any more money into Mika Mobile's products.

The Strikers 1999 app just got a pretty neat update.  Normally, most jets are locked, and have have a variety of ways to unlock ranging from simple (Let them post to Facebook), to tedious (Collect 3,000 medals).

There's a "random select" function you can use tokens (The in game currency) for, that randomly select any plane for one play, whether they're locked or not.  This does NOT include continues, where you're stuck to unlockables.

Well, they just added a feature where, for the price of a 30 second ad, you get one session with any plane you want.  Again, no continues apply, but it makes a huge difference using the transforming robot jet gun for awhile (Furthest jet to the right, and best in the game.)

With it, playing through Hard mode and racking up the 300 jewels (Premium currency) needed to unlock is pretty easy, as one full play nets about 34 jewels a piece.  (You start out with about 100 jewels.)

But you only really need the jewels for the robot jet, as it's the only one without an alternative unlock method.  (Hey, best in the game.  You think they'd let their prize fighter loose without tying it to premium currency?)

The tl:dr version, Strikers 1999 is pretty fun if you like shmups.  :)

A lot of industry people have said - and I agree - that Nintendo stands to make untold billions if they would just license their games/characters to other studios.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.  Best 7 bucks I ever spent.  :)

Kind of ironic that I was an NES guy, and thanks to compilations ended up playing way more Genesis games them I ever have Nintendo products.

(P.S., if anyone owns an Amazon device, Sonic CD was added to their "Amazon Underground" list of paid apps that they give away free to the public, while paying devs based on how much you use it.  Which means monitoring your usage, but supposedly no data mining or intrusive ads.. )

I'll confess, I only wanted to try it the moment it got shut down,  That usually flags a fan game as something special, since god knows there's tons and tons of fan games that never get noticed..

Super Mega Baseball is free right now for Games With Gold on Xbox One. It's done in the same kind of style as Hot Shots Golf - not the same, but in a cartoon/comic character style. But all the mechanics are in there in hitting and pitching, there's different stadium styles, and a whole lot more. It's tons of fun, I highly recommend it if you like baseball games at all.

Went to the CT Retrocon this past weekend.  A LOT of fun, they had vendor's all over the place, a free play arcade, consoles set up to CRT TV's (including Project M, the mod of Smash Bros Melee), a live band..

And I met Pat the NES Punk (Host of Completely Unnecessary Podcast), who was in from California selling and signing an awesome looking Nintendo book he made. At 60 dollars, I passed on it, maybe I'll read a friends copy (I figure I can read anything I want on the web for free, and Pat isn't enough of a celebrity for my 60 dollars.)

I did buy several games though. Probably overpaid, but at these conventions you tend to spend a lot more freely then bargian hunting amazon or local shops..  smile

The games are: Godzilla: Save the Earth, Katamari Damacy, and Sonic Mega Collection Plus.

The sonic one is the only game I played so far, mainly to unlock Sonic 3 and knuckles, and round out my collection from the Sonic's Ultimate Set. (Yeah, I could have just emulated, but I prefer not to if there's an alternative..)

Thinking of cracking open Karamari next.. From what I hear, it's a really good game, and Damacy is supposed to be one of the better in the series..

Megaman games.

You know, nostalgia's a funny thing.  Here, they released a Megaman Legacy collection, when we already had a Megaman Anniversary collection.  That's nothing new, they re-release Genesis games all the time.  But, they also made Megaman 9 and 10 decades after the original series saw it's last release.

My point, is I'm playing the recent releases side by side with the Anniversary classics, plus the X collection.

The X games are SO much better then the classics.  But no one has nostalgia for the SNES/PSX 16-32 bit games, apparently.  Only the 8 bit NES games.

I didn't realize that was even the case. So far - and again I'm not that deep into the game - any time I've been required to go somewhere to recruit a driver or start a race, the travel time has been a couple minutes tops. Maybe it gets longer deeper into the game and I'll see an issue then, but for now it's perfectly ok.

Monkey Island S.E.

Played through the originals like everybody.  Got to be honest, I probably should have left this at "happy memories".

The problem usually creeps up late game, where they go from clever puzzles to "find Waldo" type pixel hunts where everythings clickable, but only one thing is what you need to advance the game.

That, or they try way too hard to be clever, and have a puzzle solution you'd need to stumble across by accident.

Methodically hunting through an entire map pixel by pixel, multiple times, just isn't my idea of fun anymore.

I was big into Marvel Puzzle Quest, another match 3 game, but they went crazy with the updates and new premium cards.  Might give this one a try, I could use another good match 3..

For Honor.  Enjoying it but frustrated by it.  The combat system is brilliant but there are plenty of times I find myself wondering how I was supposed to do or accomplish anything in the fight I was in

The end of level 2 was floored me when the boss, Skullmegeddon, spoke and sounded just like
Skeletor.

So Prime, ever get around to Devestation?

The main campaign is fun, but the extra missions should be fun forever, considering things like the full Seekers, races, quirky team ups like Optimus and Megatron.

Kind of wish there was a Decepticon campaign, or at least an option to play as Megatron in mission mode though.

Don't be afraid to play on a lower difficulty.

Dodging and slowmo is key, dodges have invincibility frames.  Go right through attacks.

Hey Prime, have you unlocked Grimlock yet?

He's awesome for newbs.  I cleared my first time with him.

The trick is tapping the B button to make him run, then press either light attack (A quick charge) or heavy (A body splash).  They home right in on enemies, and are invincible, and very very spammable (The light attack alone can be chained indefinately to make mincemeat of bosses.)

Bought Jamestown years ago on Steam, found it to be laggy, and gave up on it.  Found out about it booting up with one core affinity (Never even thought to check that for such a non intensive looking game), and checked to see if setting both cores would fix the lag.  Yep, it did.

Only problem is, for some reason the task manager makes the game appear frozen..  I say appear, because as long as I don't move the mouse from the "fullscreen" box, I can switch it and it works fine after.  So, problem basically solved.  And I'm enjoying the game properly now, and even thinking of buying into some dlc, except..

Just, WHY?  That's such a simple fix on their end, and apparently enough people were having this problem that some Steam forums were dedicated to it.  Surely, the devs got complaints about this issue, and just chose not to bother dealing with it.  It's simple things like that that makes me not really want to send any more money their way, you know?

Discovered this gem.  Free download, donateware.

It's one of the best old school shmups I've ever played, in the style of Salamander/Life Force/Gradius.  These days, all you get are "bullet hell" shooters, but this is right out of the 80's arcade games we grew up with, and it's beautiful.  Has (Toggleable) fake scanlines, high res box art, retro soundtrack and everything.  Nothing like it on Steam or commercially.  A real work of passion by the dev.

Oxygen Not Included:

Fun ass game but hard as hell.  In Alpha right now but still feels like a more or less complete game.  Highly suggest it if you like survival games and city management games.

Also playing Tales of Symphonia, again.   Nostalgia gaming kicked in as I had started playing Tales of Zestiria for the first time as I got it in a Humble Bundle recently and it just made me miss Symphonia as Zestiria is lacking in a lot of areas

It can.  Honestly every time I go to play through again I just remember the game being really long.  Then as I play I realize it is only a long run through because I spend a lot of time just grinding Gald to rebuild Luin as soon as possible, always have the best equipment, and fill in all the Question Marks in the Monster List XD

In reality if you just focus on the story it's about normal length for a JRPG

Finally got into Titanfall 2. The game looks absolutely amazing, and the game play itself is pretty fluid and easy to get into. I like that the Titans have their own personality somewhat, and that they learn from their human pilots as well as take their own actions.

I haven't gotten to that point yet and I don't even know if it's going to happen but if there's an extended dramatic cut scene where my Titan gets lost, I'm gonna be upset lol. It's a welcome change from the first game where the Titans where essentially just tools to be called in and used as weapons.

This game is a lot of fun so far. I'm assuming I'm about halfway through the campaign. I haven't played multiplayer yet - I've been using the campaign to get used to using my Titan before I jump into that.

Just a fyi because I know you like shooters:  Infinity Gene is great.

It's basically every shooter since Space Invaders in one package.  Criminally underrated and a good price (As you know, many "brand name" shooters are fairly expensive.)

I liked Batman, bur never played GOT.

Would you say it's about as good?  (I'd say that about Wolf Among us, ftr.  Good enough to play all five episodes in a single sitting.)

I would say that GoT is good, but Batman is pretty superior, at least IMO. GoT is much less action based, though there is some at the start and end. GoT is more truly an interactive movie with some action bits, and Batman is closer to 60/40 on that part.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo "HD Remix".  Bought it on impulse along with SF3 Online and Super Puzzle Fighter II.

Loving it, but I don't think I'll ever be able to fight Akuma. Just not that good to clear the game without losing once, even on easy.

(Had some bonus entertainment from looking for some faqs, and finding out the fighting game community had a meltdown over the balance changes.  Only in competitive fighters, you don't see Pac-Man or Doom fans having a revolt over every tweak or release.  :) )

Raystorm HD.

Was torn between that, Raiden IV, Raiden Fighters Aces, and Rez HD.

No regrets, the game's awesome.  Got torn up by the review sites like Gamespot/IGN way more then it deserved, with an odd complaint about a 15 dollar price tag being too much.

Lets see, Raiden IV is a 20 dollar digital download, and it used to be 40!  Ikaruga has always been 15, Raiden Fighters Aces is 20, most Cave games like Deathsmiles are around 15-20, and this one package that includes Eschatos and Judgement Sword is nearly 60!

So where are all these shmups on Xbox Live Arcade that are better then Raystorm, and far less expensive?

Best I could figure, the reviewers either have a personal bias against the thing (They often talk up Ikaruga in the process), or they assume Raystorm just doesn't have the cult following of a lot of other shmups, and so show their true colors against the entire genre when they feel there's no one to cater to and draw in those clicks..
Title: Re: Currently playing thread

Rez HD.  For 10 bucks, it's practically an impulse buy.

Game's a party in a can.  In other words, it's LOUD like a party.

I love it, but depending on where you live, this isn't the type of game you can play without a headset (And unlike on a laptop/desktop, setting up a headset is tricky..)

Dragon's Dogma:  Dark Asisen.

Like this way more then Skyrim.  Fun, but the stat system kind of restricts your class choice a bit (Assassin builds strength, Wizards builds mana, Ranger builds stamina ect.  The game breaking part is only two stats worth a damn, being offensive strength or magic.)  and it only auto saves at events/towns, so it could set you back pretty far if you die grinding or free exploring.

I hear they're remastering it for PS4/Xbone.

I really want to play it more but I keep making it there and the size of the world and openness is really overwhelming and daunting.

That and it's on my PC which I'm in the process of upgrading so gaming on it has come to a halt while I work on Platinuming my PS4 exclusive games.

Try just randomly exploring.  You come across so much shite.

And it gets really good on Bitterblack Isle.  Won't spoil why, but it's like Links darkverse, all the awesome stuff happens there.

The main thing is stocking the right skills for wandering..  Like, a sniping skill is a must (Mobs have a limited area, so backpeddling and sniping along the outskirts is go-to weapon of last resort), and there's defensive skills that save on stamina (Assassin's forward roll lets you evade and build stamina back up, and bonus it's faster then running without the stamina burn, so just roll everywhere outside)
Title: Re: Currently playing thread
Post by: DocSavage on August 01, 2017, 09:42:28 PM
Forget everything I said, this game throws tactics back in your face depending on enemy.

Just exploring around, you'll find SO MUCH cool stuff.

Like, I was wandering around and found a goblin camp with two helmed giant slaves.  Wiped it out, then moved to an area a few feet over, and a damned giant stone golem appears out of nowhere.  And then I found a sword in a stone right there, and pulled out a flaming sword.

Skyrim doesn't even compare to this game.  No wonder they're remastering it, it's like every fantasy gamers wet dream.  Even boring escort missions have you running into drakes and such (Tip:  The game tells you to run for a reason.  Damage calculations are based on your combined offense to their defense, e.g. Drake has 400 defense, you have 399 attack, you will NOT do any damage.  At all.)

Been playing the Megaman X collection, and got a bit frustrated at the spider boss in the Sigma levels, so decided to switch out and try Zero in X4 (From the proper Playstation disc on a PS2, not the collection.  Learned that the texture smoothing function causes glitch's on an hdtv..)

Zero's pretty fun.  Frustrating against some bosses, especially Cyber Peacock, but it's sort of like putting Strider in a Megaman game.

I've pretty much stopped playing Destiny and now split my time between Recore and Diablo 3, both on Xbox One.

Recore's bot loadout/upgrade system using parts you find as you explore and from destroyed enemies is pretty cool. I've only played Diablo 3 for a few hours so I'm still trying to figure out the socketing/jewel system. Both games look great and are fun to play. Recore has some difficult jumping puzzles but it's fairly easy to catch on to once you've made a couple attempts.
