Yeah, I'm catching up on the DVR.  First question - do these Chicago crowds really think chanting CM Punk's name every time is going to do anything?  He doesn't even want to be there.

Anyone here invested in a good gaming monitor that they'd recommend?  Looking for one that refreshes higher than 60Hz.

I did actually scroll back, but I couldn't seem to find a thread for this game.  I found Brotherhood and Revelations, but not 3 itself.
Anyway, I started playing this again recently after my stepson started playing 4.  I remembered quickly why I put it down in the first place.  It starts SLOOOOOWWWWW!  But, I kept plugging away and only did storyline missions without getting distracted by sidequests.  Finally got my assassin robes and blades, and the game is starting to get interesting now that we're into the start of the Revolutionary War.
Planning to continue pushing through it and get it finished, and then I may consider getting a PS4 for AC4.  I've also started seeing trailers for the co-op game play of AC: Unity, and I must admit that sounds interesting too!

Tech-apalooza / Monitor Question
« on: November 14, 2012, 12:21:53 AM »
I just bought a second monitor for my setup at home.  It actually came with an HDMI cable (which almost never happens), but when I hook it up via that cable and set it for max resolution there is a small black band around the outside of the picture.  I try adjusting the manual settings in the monitor to change the size, but they are grayed out.  Anyone seen this?  If I go down one setting from max, it fills the whole screen just fine.  Just kinda strange ...

Baseball / Perfect Games

On the same day that Philip Humber of the White Sox threw his perfect game, there was also a perfect game of a different kind.
Yeah, it's high school softball, but it's still pretty amazing to strike out every batter you face in a game!

Other Sports Discussion / Bowling Nationals

Each year, the United States Bowling Congress stages a national open tournament for any sanctioned bowler who wants to participate.  Over the course of several months, as many as 60,000 contestants descend on the host city to try their luck at a national championship.  This year, the tournament is being held in Baton Rouge, and I participated for the first time.

We took two teams of 5 guys each.  Team event was Wednesday night, and then singles and doubles were yesterday.  The lane conditions are tougher than your average league conditions.  I won't bore you with why, so just take my word for it.

Went into it with pretty low expectations as I had never done it before, and team event did its best to prove me right.  I didn't throw a double all night and ended up throwing my lowest series in many years.  Needless to say, that didn't instill me with a great deal of confidence going into singles and doubles the next day.  Fortunately, I was able to find a decent shot and carry it threw both rounds.  Ended up averaging over 200 for the second day, which was way more than I had hoped for.

Pretty good chance my cousin and I will cash in the doubles event, and an outside shot that I can cash in singles.  Not bad for a rookie!

Other Sports Discussion / All-Purpose Golf Discussion

There's not really enough discussion on golf here to warrant multiple threads (except maybe for majors), so we'll keep the rest in here.

We have a new #1 player in the world in Rory McIlroy, who unseated Luke Donald a week or so ago in winning the Honda Classic.  He held of a hard charging Tiger Woods in the final round when Tiger put up a fantastic 62.  This led many in the world to declare "Tiger is back!" right up until he withdrew from Doral last Sunday with an injury.  On the plus side, sounds like he just tweaked his Achilles and should be hitting balls again by the end of the week.

We're hitting to the final build up to Augusta, which is my favorite tournament of the year.

Tech-apalooza / Upgrading to Razr Maxx today!

Despite Jarret's best efforts, I still like my Android phone.   :good_mini:

Everything I've read about the Razr Maxx regarding battery life sounds amazing.  As much as I use my phone while at work and such, I do burn a fair amount of battery.  Looking forward to seeing this thing in action.

Buy one get one free doesn't hurt either!

Football / Manning and Colts

Things are not well in the Circle City:

Sounds like Manning was interviewed the other day and made some comments about the house cleaning that Irsay has been doing in the front office, and Jim didn't like it.  This is NOT the way you want to handle this situation if you are Jim Irsay.  If you need to move on, figure out a way to do it without this pissing contest in the press.  Not only is Peyton clearly the MVP of the team, but he is very near royalty in the city.  The children's hospital bears his name for good reason.  Irsay should not wait to reach out to Peyton.  This needs to happen now.

I got early access from pre-ordering, so I was able to get in a few hours with the game last night.  Never played any kind of MMORPG before, so I don't have a basis for comparison to WoW or anything like that.

I selected a Jedi Knight for my character (shocking, I know!), so my story started on the Jedi home planet of Tython.  My entire game time last night was spent in Padawan training missions around the planet.  Combat took a little getting used to from the single player games I've always played, but it wasn't so bad.  Seemed a little choppy at times even on what I think is a decent computer, so I'll have to look into the settings a bit to see if it's me or just the server I happened to be playing on.

So far, they're at least telling a little bit of a story as they send me off on these training missions.  I can't imagine the story could be as good as KOTOR since there are so many of us playing (can't have a million Darth Revan's running around), but I'm hoping there's at least enough there to keep it interesting.  I can also see how swapping characters and developing different ones could keep the game interesting as well.

One day down - rest of my life to start wasting!

Gaming Forum / Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Picked it up Tuesday after work and have logged a lot of hours so far.  The premise is picking up Ezio in his later years.  He has come to the Middle East to learn more about the history of his brotherhood and in search of the library of Altair.  The Templars have taken control of Masyaf and nearby Constantinople.  Ezio must find 5 Masyaf keys to open the vault where Altair's library awaits.

Similar to Brotherhood, the entire game appears to take place in one huge city.  Game play is similar enough, though I do like the changes they've made to the assassin missions for your recruits.  Like the last game, you take over areas of the city by ousting the Templar den captain controlling it.  If your notoriety meter maxes out, the Templars can attack your den to try and take it back.  I still haven't gotten the hang of defending them, so I end up just needing to take it back.

With each key that you find, you get to replay a memory of Altair.  I've done a couple now.  They pick up at the end of the first game with Altair taking the Apple of Eden from Al Mualim, and then they go through the following years.  They're relatively short, but it's nice to get a peek at the rest of his life.

So far, I'm enjoying it quite a lot!

Football / NFL Week 4
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:15:09 PM »
This is the first Sunday of the year that I was able to be at home all day.  Had it on Redzone pretty much all afternoon, so I got to see highlights from all the games.

1.  Tony Romo is the worst clutch QB in the game right now.  How do you give up a 24 point lead to the Lions?  Throwing two pick 6's is a good start!
2.  Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are going to rewrite the records books this year.  Going to be tough to pick which one of them wins the MVP.
3.  Cam Newton is making the kind of mistakes you'd expect of a rookie, but man has he got skills.  If they can improve the talent around him, the Panthers will be good for a while.
4.  The Eagles are confounding, to say the least.  Nice win for the 49ers and my old buddy, Jim Harbaugh.  Captain Comeback might be rubbing off on them.
5.  Eli Manning may have won the game at the last minute, but he was really not all that good today.
6.  The Steelers are as big a disappointment as the Eagles right now.  The entire state of Pennsylvania probably wants a do over on this season.
7.  Victor Cruz WAS NOT DOWN!

Colts football gets started tomorrow without Peyton Manning for the first time in over a decade.  I was a Colts fan before he got there, and I'll certainly be a Colts fan after he's gone.  Still, it would be nice to get a few more years!

Very popular win for Darren Clarke this morning at Royal St. George's.  That's 3 of the last 5 major winners from Northern Ireland.  Never would have bet money on that!

Mickelson made a heck of a run through 10 holes today in some testy conditions, but then reverted to his usual self.  Missed a gimme on 11 and then the wheels came off.  For a guy as supremely talented as he is, he misses more short putts than anybody I've ever seen.

I might be the only one, but I'm picking this up at GameStop on the way home tonight.  Played the last one over a decade ago and had given the sequel up for dead obviously.  Very curious to see how they've updated it.  If it's still got Duke's one liners and lots of shit blowing up, I'm good to go!

Wow, Rory McIlroy gags away the Masters on Sunday, and then he comes out and blitzes the field in the first two rounds at Congressional.  Is he playing the same course everybody else is?  Can he keep it together over the weekend and bag his first major?

Other Sports Discussion / US Open Bowling
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:13:09 PM »
Today was the TV telecast for the finals of the US Open.  Mike Koivuniemi has been the best bowler in the world this year, and he advanced to the finals to meet tournament leader Norm Duke.

The US Open (similar to how they do it in golf) is setup to be the toughest lane conditions that the pros face all year, which puts a premium on spare shooting and keeps the scores low.  However, it appeared that Mika had them figured out.  He was steamrolling the competition until the final.  In the last match, Duke put up a heck of a fight, but Mika doubled going into the 10th and only needed a spare to win.  His first ball was good, but not quite good enough.  The 10 pin remained.  He didn't have a single open frame in 3 matches on TV.

Until now ...

Mika whiffed the 10 pin and handed the US Open title to Norm Duke.  Crazy pressure on that spare that he's made thousands of times in his life.  Duke was stunned, and Mika just sat in the chair with his head in his hands while Norm was presented the trophy.  Can't even imagine what's going through Mika's head tonight.  Mika has three majors already, including winning the tournament of champions earlier this year with the highest purse in bowling history, so I know he can handle pressure.  Just wasn't his day, I guess.

General Discussion / Facebook Ads and Firefox
« on: February 15, 2011, 09:17:11 PM »
Anybody using Firefox having trouble the terribly intrusive ads on Facebook?  I like Firefox in general, but I don't see all these ads using any other browser on Facebook.  Is there a way to get rid of them?  I don't really have this issue on any websites other than Facebook either.

Wrestling & MMA / Bobby Heenan DVD
« on: January 23, 2011, 08:22:11 PM »
I picked this up at Walmart last weekend and finally sat down to watch it the other day.  It was mostly rehashed footage as I noticed a lot of it in the video they used when they inducted him into the HOF years ago.  The interviews looked rehashed too, except for the chats with his wife and daughter.  I was surprised that they had zero commentary from Heenan himself during the "documentary" portion of the video, and I had feared his health had gotten worse.  But, he did show up doing interviews for some of the bonus content.  Not exactly sure why they edited it that way, but whatever.

One of the matches they included was the Royal Rumble that Flair won with Heenan on commentary - "That's not fair to Flair!"

Picked this up on the way home from work tonight.  I'm a total nut for the story mode, so I'm playing that first.  However, I'm eager to try out the new multiplayer once I'm done with this.

So far, thumbs up.  But I'm very early on yet.

They brought the Stanley Cup to our home office today.  There was a raffle for people who could have their picture taken with it, and my boss won.  He's been a Hawks fan his whole life, so he was pumped!
