Gaming Forum / Best/favorite last gen game?
« on: May 23, 2017, 12:00:55 PM »
We did this for 6th gen (I believe Ninja Gaiden and God of War were favorite picks).

Not a list, just the one game you think was the defining "must own" for last gen.

For me, I'm kind of leaning towards Pac-Man Championship DX.  It captured the "arcade experience at home" perfectly, you can't beat it for sheer fun factor or pick up and playability.

Never seen one that handles motion half as well as a crt.

Are plasma's any better?

General Discussion / Game of Thrones (Season 7)
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:59:00 AM »
May as well start the new season talk.

Now that I have a legal channel, I'm trying to binge from start to current.  Currently up to ep 4, so spoiler tags please.

Anyways, in every media like this, nobles are always prissy while kings are crude and blunt.  Is that basically how it was...?  I mean, kings promoted nobles, right?  Shouldn't they "all" be crude?

General Discussion / Picking up: Are you supposed to tip.
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:21:34 PM »
If I'm ordering something from a diner or restaurant, and they have a spot on the reciept for a tip, I never pay it (In fact, I cross through it, as I heard that prevents them filling in whatever they want).

But last time, the lady behind the counter rolled her eyes at me.  Why?  All she does is hold onto the meal and check me out, there's no real service happening (If anyone deserves a tip, it's the cook.)

Am I wrong?

I understand it's on Netflix now.  Anyone check it out?

Geekville / Toriko
« on: April 11, 2017, 02:04:10 PM »
Discovered this manga series recently.  It's basically a mash up of "fight manga" and "Iron Chef".  The hero's go hunting super animals for food, like beasts the size of dinosaurs, or pieces of meat from inside a giant elephant, or hunting down corn the size of skyscrapers, then frying the kernals in a volcano.

Way over the top stuff, but that's the charm.  Peta would probably blacklist it (I mean, they literally eat some animals alive from the inside.  :)  )

Geekville / Buffy
« on: April 09, 2017, 01:05:14 AM »
Been binging on Buffy, and got up to the Lucky 19 episode, about a kid in a coma who brings nightmares to life.

The episode was fun enough (Outside of Joss's usual anti smoking campaign), but the end confused me.  The coach blamed the kid for losing (Expected the coach to be outed as a child molester, but nope.  Just molesting self esteem), and he gets sent to prison.

What?  I could see being fired as a coach, but prison?  Did I miss something?

Edit:  I guess maybe the coach is the one who beat Billy into a coma?

The show doesn't really point that out though..  It just harps on the "There were eight other kids and you blamed Billy for losing" angle.

Movie Steve Rogers fights a 16 year old girl.  :)

Who wins?

Gaming Forum / Memory stick not downloading games
« on: April 02, 2017, 10:44:30 AM »
The oddest thing:  I have two memory sticks.  A 15 gb Cruzer, and a 140 gb something Ultra 3.0.

On an Xbox system, for some reason the Ultra refuses to directly download games to it.  This is not an issue with the lower capacity Cruzer.

In all other ways, the Ultra functions perfectly.  I can perform "moves" to it, and transfer data.  I can install dvd disks to it.  I can play off of it.  It's only that one thing is won't do...  If targeted for a download, it goes to the other stick or hdd.  If every storage unit but the Ultra is full, it doesn't download at all.

Very odd.

General Discussion / Iron Fist (Netflix)
« on: March 12, 2017, 06:12:38 PM »
Anyone see it yet?  I'd like to hear a review from the people I know aren't tremendously biased one way or another.  ;)

Reviews have torn it apart, but it's hard to seperate the "missed a chance at casting an asian" sour grapes, the "I don't like Iron Fist and wish this was never shot" types, and the critics that are genuinely trying to look at it based on it's own merits.

Geekville / Comics that would make good shows
« on: February 20, 2017, 11:09:59 PM »
IMO, The Question would convert nicely to a CW show.

I'm talking about the Denny O'neil line, written around the time of Green Arrows Longbow Hunters.  You've got an ass kicking main character who doesn't remember his past, several beautiful female supporting characters, lots and lots of drama, lots and lots of sex.

You know, a CW show in a nutshell.  ;)

That whole era of DC comics is kind of what the TV hero shows seem to pattern themselves after.  More or less soap operas for capes..

Gaming Forum / I have a confession to make
« on: February 16, 2017, 06:16:07 PM »
I can't stand Zelda games.

Never liked them, and I kept going back to them thinking "maybe if I give it a chance", but nope.

I think it's all the fetching and meandering about.  That kind of thing bores me to tears..  Searching a map for hours on end to get a hidden cave, or work my way through a maze just isn't for me.

Oddly, I enjoy games like Portal or Monkey Island, which also involve a lot of puzzle solving.  But I guess it's not so much hopeless wandering..  You never really get lost, and know what to focus on.

What if Miyagi refused to heal Danny's leg?  Think he'd have earned enough respect from the Kai kids that they'd lay off/accept him?

General Discussion / Easy Rider (1969)
« on: February 09, 2017, 12:48:31 AM »
Isn't 1969 the end of the hippie era?  A little late to the party, aren't they?

Anyways, I saw it for the first time.  Didn't like it.

Maybe it's a generation gap thing, because I don't like or understand hippie culture in general.  Even Cheech and Chong leaves me cold..

The locations and scenery is nice though.

Geekville / Usagi Yojimbo
« on: January 16, 2017, 04:27:37 AM »
Maybe you remember a samurai rabbit in the various tmnt cartoons?  That was Miyomoto Usagi.

The writer of it, Stan Sakai, also worked on the awesome Groo.  As a letterer, I think.

Anyways, Usagi Yojimbo's been around since the 1980's, growing up with the turtles, but I only recently really looked at the series.  And got to say, it's a masterpiece.  Think Maus.  Not nearly as heavy as the holocaust, but you do have the very serious subject matter of feudal Japan being told through cute animals.  Complete with stylishly cartoony death heads over a character to denote they passed away from a fatal wound.

Words can't really do this series justice, it's something that needs to be experienced.  But I will say you will learn something about Japanese culture and not feel like you're being force fed some boring history lesson.  You'll probably find several charactere you like, too, as there's many, and varied, and very well characterized.

Honestly, the best praise I can give it is that I haven't enjoyed a series so much since Astro City.  It's THAT good.

Geekville / Name a comic general who isn't evil.
« on: January 12, 2017, 07:35:50 PM »
And GI Joe doesn't count.

Seriously, they're all evil.

I was reading a Batman story about the introduction of venom.  Mad scientist teams up with evil general to make Batman an addict.
Spawn comics, every military guy is an evil Patton.  Spawn even shoots one in the head mid Patton rant..

Marvel has General Ross.  DC has General Zod, AND General Lane (Lois's father, genocided New Krypton), AND "The General" who took over uber regenerating Shaggy Man..

Gaming Forum / Hipster Whale.
« on: January 02, 2017, 12:34:36 PM »

This is the greatest dev name ever.  Hipster....  Whale.

They pretty much named their company after the rubes they're targeting.  The "whales" they expect to spend a ton of money on iap, which are probably hipsters.  :)

Geekville / Doomsday vs Juggernaut
« on: January 01, 2017, 04:26:28 PM »
So Death Battle did a really neat video where Hulk and Doomsday slug it out.  (Skip to about 13 minutes for the fight.)

Now, this is something no two people will agree on, just like Superman vs Thor.  But lets take their logic, and trade out Hulk for Juggernaut (Who is completely immune to physical injury by magic, and as strong as an average Hulk without the rage increases.)

Keep the Death Battle rules, where the fight never ends until someone dies.  What happens?

General Discussion / Magnum P.I. reboot?
« on: December 31, 2016, 09:32:25 AM »
ABC announced a reboot centering on Magnum's grown daughter.

Trying to figure who could possibly play Magnum's mustache.  Only guy even comes close is Nick Offerman:

Don Frye has a really nice stach', and he's the right age.  Acting shouldn't be a problem with something like this, he could just be himself like Bruce Campbell in Ash vs Evil Dead.

Like so:

Totally something Magmun P.I. would say.  ;)

Gaming Forum / Mario Mobile
« on: December 29, 2016, 10:50:29 AM »
Nintendo finally does a proper app game, and they get it all wrong.

3 level demo, 10 dollar unlock, in game iap, AND a requirement to have an internet connection at all times (Forget about playing on the go if you don't have a robust data plan with a lot of coverage.)

Too bad, because the game itself seems great.  But the mobile markets habits are too engrained to go for this,  even coming from Nintendo.

Tech-apalooza / Do you really need screen protectors?
« on: December 25, 2016, 11:14:58 AM »
On my last Kindle Fire, I used it naked and it lasted fine.  But that was gorilla glass.

Now I'm looking at something like an Ipad Mini 2. (A friend has one and I love how it performs.) Is protection necessary for everyday use?

Searching the web reveals little..  Apple won't even reveal what kind of glass they use.

I'd assume almost every device on the market is at least tempered, scratch resistant stuff.

General Discussion / Favorite Christmas movies/shows?

For me, Galaxy Quest is one of them.

Hey, it was released on Christmas, 1999.  :)

Also, the first Futurama Christmas episode, where John DiMaggio voices Robot Santa.
