Tech-apalooza / Windows 10 anti-virus

Windows defender is basically MS Security Essentials, right?

So no need to invest in a third party package?

Geekville / Wicked + The Divine

Remember Lost?  This has the same problems as Lost.

Starts off strong, piles on twist after twist, mystery after mystery, twenty questions for every one answer.

And by the second half you kind of wish everyone would just die slasher movie style.

Geekville / Star Trek: Discovery
« on: October 16, 2017, 05:22:16 PM »
Anyone following this:

Michael Burnham = Kara Thrace

Captain Lorca = Admiral Cain

Klingons = Cylons

Discovery = not based on Trek, but on another character based space drama.

Maybe not a perfect fit, but is anyone else seeing more in common with Galactica Reimagined then with Trek?

Thought it was pretty awesome, and loved the NJPW personalities.

That final stretch, though:
Spoiler  :
If this was an actual wrestling show, wouldn't Takuma/Tiger the Darkness have just killed the tension the way he single handedly squashed the two top dogs in Tigers Den?  I mean, he just hits his finisher like he's peak era Stone Cold Steve Austin, takes them both out.  And everyones still acting like The Thirds a big deal, as if that never happened..

General Discussion / Walter White vs Tony Soprano
« on: September 01, 2017, 07:53:29 PM »
Just something I thought of re-watching Sopranos.

Lets say Tony had a problem with Walt's operation in his territory, and Tony goes after him with everything he has (Including every other family he can convince to help him), and Walt, with Mike and every resource he had at his peak, retaliates by trying to break the back of Tony's family.

Who survives when the dust clears?

General Discussion / So, lawyers..
« on: August 13, 2017, 09:16:22 AM »
The state just put my father in the hospital.

He's been fighting them for four months about care for his 94 year old father (My grandfather), after he suffered a fall and had to stay in another hospital.  Unfortunately, he wasn't at the VA, which would have covered everything, so we're on the hook for the bill.

A social worker claimed if we keep him there for a month and deplete all his assets, the state will step in and cover it, and maybe we can get him at home care.

That was four months ago.  Since then, the case workers been dragging her feet.  Been hard to even contact, asked us about two vehicles he never even owned and couldn't be bothered to check on (We got the proof), and told us outright she's just been sitting on the case.  Her boss wasn't any better, he told us flat out the state isn't paying for at home care, and will take his entire social security check.  When asked how he's supposed to live without money, the guy said "The state doesn't care!".  I kid you not.

So that's where we're at, and then today he has a heart attack.

Naturally, I want to do something, but I'm just not sure what there is TO do..  The workers don't give a crap, and if I contacted our representative, what am I supposed to tell him?  Not like he's gonna make them at least do their jobs, instead of sit on it forever and he impossible to contact..  (May as well ask him to hurry up the dmv.)

But I'm open to suggestions anyways..  Anything except for "Get a lawyer", which unfortunately isn't an option at the moment (Can't afford one..)

One neat perk of a console is all the anime and shows on that app, right to your tv.  No need to pirate stream ever with it.

Even has Samurai Pizza Cats, the dub.

General Discussion / Vinegar as a cleaner
« on: July 13, 2017, 12:12:11 PM »
I normally hit my toilets and such with bleach, but I've been hearing a 50/50 vinegar solution does the jobs.  Only reason I'd even consider it is because I can't stand bleach fumes.

But does anyone know if this works, or is just another "holistic junk science" remedy, like those idiots that try and cure cancer with herbs or whatever?

Geekville / Abridged series
« on: June 28, 2017, 05:02:10 PM »
Anyone watch the various parody shows out there?

Think  "What's Up, Tiger Lily".  Or maybe Samurai Pizza Cats.

Teamfourstar does a lot of them, like Dragon Ball and Hellsing.

Kind of a nerdy hobby, even for the resident nerds, but just wondering.

General Discussion / How far ahead to you shop?
« on: June 07, 2017, 05:47:06 PM »
Asking becauase my 95 year old grandfather, who recently suffered a fall and was hospitalized (Nothing broken, thank god, his face was merely bruised up.  Ready to come home soon.)

So, I've been going through his things while he's away, to clean up for the incoming help, and found a lot of stuff stowed away.

We're talking five containers of maple syrup kind of backups.

He's always spent a lot, and we assumed he just eats day and night and rarely sleeps.  Clearly, he's either just looking at sales and buying whatever's on, or his memory's going.

But I see a lot of "buy up all the sales" people, just filling their carriages with junk they probably don't really want because it's "cheaper".

So, wondering how people shop here.

Me, I'll hit up sales on things I know I want already.  Tbh, I purposely try to keep junk to a minimum as part of my diet strategy..  I have low impulse control, so if it's not there I can't binge on it, and I'll give myself one or two binging days  (Down over 10 lbs in the last four months.  Maybe not spectacular, but it's progress..)

General Discussion / Thomas the Tank Engine and Alec Baldwin
« on: May 28, 2017, 09:47:35 PM »
Hoping maybe Freakshow might know a thing or two, since he worke in Hollywood:

Alec Baldwin in Thomas the Tank engine.

There HAS to be a story behind that.  No way someone like Alec Baldwin would demand starring in Thomas the f'n Tank Engine..  I just can't believe that.

But to this day, no dirty laundry..  I still believe it was some weird punishment for something or other (If the Ireland thing didn't come 6 years later, I'd have assumed that was it.)  Shoot the movie, or get blackballed.

Geekville / Star Wars Despecialized and Silver Screen Edition
« on: May 27, 2017, 11:43:10 PM »
Recently found out about these "high definition" fan versions of the original trilogy.

Basically, once it appeared there would never be an official release of the original trilogy in unaltered format fit for hd sets, some fans decided to make their own.

The most popular is a series called "Harmy's Despecialized", with all three films done by Harmy.  What he does, is take most of what's available on blue ray, then splices in from other sources like the laserdisc versions available on the 2004 dvd sets, upscaling and doing his best to remaster them to match the hd content.

Obviously, there's going to be some quality differences no matter what, but the clips are either space battle or short scenes, so they blend in pretty well.

The alternative, called Silver Screen Edition, only covers episode IV, and involves a single source of film that's been cleaned frame by frame so it ends up looking much better then what you'd see on laserdisc or vhs.  There's more grain then Harmy's version, and the color's are less saturated, but some consider it the more authentic version (Including Harmy himself, at least before his latest release where he used some of SSE's footage.)

Since this is a "grey area", I won't tell you how to get these, but they both look excellent on hd sets.  If you wanted to introduce your kids/grandkids to Star Wars as you remember it, this is definately the way to do it imo (Or even just for nostalgia's sake.)

Gaming Forum / Best/favorite last gen game?
« on: May 23, 2017, 12:00:55 PM »
We did this for 6th gen (I believe Ninja Gaiden and God of War were favorite picks).

Not a list, just the one game you think was the defining "must own" for last gen.

For me, I'm kind of leaning towards Pac-Man Championship DX.  It captured the "arcade experience at home" perfectly, you can't beat it for sheer fun factor or pick up and playability.

General Discussion / Game of Thrones (Season 7)
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:59:00 AM »
May as well start the new season talk.

Now that I have a legal channel, I'm trying to binge from start to current.  Currently up to ep 4, so spoiler tags please.

Anyways, in every media like this, nobles are always prissy while kings are crude and blunt.  Is that basically how it was...?  I mean, kings promoted nobles, right?  Shouldn't they "all" be crude?

General Discussion / Picking up: Are you supposed to tip.
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:21:34 PM »
If I'm ordering something from a diner or restaurant, and they have a spot on the reciept for a tip, I never pay it (In fact, I cross through it, as I heard that prevents them filling in whatever they want).

But last time, the lady behind the counter rolled her eyes at me.  Why?  All she does is hold onto the meal and check me out, there's no real service happening (If anyone deserves a tip, it's the cook.)

Am I wrong?

Geekville / Toriko
« on: April 11, 2017, 02:04:10 PM »
Discovered this manga series recently.  It's basically a mash up of "fight manga" and "Iron Chef".  The hero's go hunting super animals for food, like beasts the size of dinosaurs, or pieces of meat from inside a giant elephant, or hunting down corn the size of skyscrapers, then frying the kernals in a volcano.

Way over the top stuff, but that's the charm.  Peta would probably blacklist it (I mean, they literally eat some animals alive from the inside.  :)  )

Geekville / Buffy
« on: April 09, 2017, 01:05:14 AM »
Been binging on Buffy, and got up to the Lucky 19 episode, about a kid in a coma who brings nightmares to life.

The episode was fun enough (Outside of Joss's usual anti smoking campaign), but the end confused me.  The coach blamed the kid for losing (Expected the coach to be outed as a child molester, but nope.  Just molesting self esteem), and he gets sent to prison.

What?  I could see being fired as a coach, but prison?  Did I miss something?

Edit:  I guess maybe the coach is the one who beat Billy into a coma?

The show doesn't really point that out though..  It just harps on the "There were eight other kids and you blamed Billy for losing" angle.

Gaming Forum / Memory stick not downloading games
« on: April 02, 2017, 10:44:30 AM »
The oddest thing:  I have two memory sticks.  A 15 gb Cruzer, and a 140 gb something Ultra 3.0.

On an Xbox system, for some reason the Ultra refuses to directly download games to it.  This is not an issue with the lower capacity Cruzer.

In all other ways, the Ultra functions perfectly.  I can perform "moves" to it, and transfer data.  I can install dvd disks to it.  I can play off of it.  It's only that one thing is won't do...  If targeted for a download, it goes to the other stick or hdd.  If every storage unit but the Ultra is full, it doesn't download at all.

Very odd.

General Discussion / Iron Fist (Netflix)
« on: March 12, 2017, 06:12:38 PM »
Anyone see it yet?  I'd like to hear a review from the people I know aren't tremendously biased one way or another.  ;)

Reviews have torn it apart, but it's hard to seperate the "missed a chance at casting an asian" sour grapes, the "I don't like Iron Fist and wish this was never shot" types, and the critics that are genuinely trying to look at it based on it's own merits.

Geekville / Comics that would make good shows
« on: February 20, 2017, 11:09:59 PM »
IMO, The Question would convert nicely to a CW show.

I'm talking about the Denny O'neil line, written around the time of Green Arrows Longbow Hunters.  You've got an ass kicking main character who doesn't remember his past, several beautiful female supporting characters, lots and lots of drama, lots and lots of sex.

You know, a CW show in a nutshell.  ;)

That whole era of DC comics is kind of what the TV hero shows seem to pattern themselves after.  More or less soap operas for capes..

Gaming Forum / I have a confession to make
« on: February 16, 2017, 06:16:07 PM »
I can't stand Zelda games.

Never liked them, and I kept going back to them thinking "maybe if I give it a chance", but nope.

I think it's all the fetching and meandering about.  That kind of thing bores me to tears..  Searching a map for hours on end to get a hidden cave, or work my way through a maze just isn't for me.

Oddly, I enjoy games like Portal or Monkey Island, which also involve a lot of puzzle solving.  But I guess it's not so much hopeless wandering..  You never really get lost, and know what to focus on.
