General Discussion / Psycho IV (1990)
« on: August 11, 2017, 02:33:01 AM »
This was....okay, I guess. As a movie, it held together a lot better than PIII, but wasn't as interesting as PII.

Here's what's always bugged me about Hitchcock's film. For the first 40+ minutes, you're basically watching a movie about a woman who embezzles her employer's company's money, so that she can run off and marry her boyfriend. Janet Leigh doesn't get knifed to death in the shower until like 45 minutes in. People call this film a masterpiece, forgetting that the first nearly-half-of-it sucks out loud. There's no way this script gets made if it's written today. Any script coverage intern would see the problem with it - it's trying to be two movies. Pick a lane.

I have a tax question - let's say in light of federal tax law, unless somebody is similarly versed in California state tax law, and can speak to that.

If a C-Corp gives a money gift to an individual, is that considered taxable income, or taxable after a certain amount, or tax free? I've heard it said that, if the money is gifted by the Board of Directors of a C-Corp, then it's a tax free gift.

Here we celebrate advancements in our society - those which eliminate the irritants of the past.

I'm happy that most vending machines no longer spit out paper bills that aren't in pristine shape.

Just watched it. Actually quite an underrated sequel, IMO. Anthony Perkins killed it (har har).

Going to try out parts III and IV and see if they hold up.

General Discussion / Ozark (Netflix)

Two episodes in. Worth watching, IMO.

Jason Bateman plays a Chicago financial advisor who, along with his business partner, is secretly laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. When they find out a few million dollars is missing, Bateman convinces them to let he and his family re-locate to the Missouri Ozarks, where he promises his drug lords he can grow their business exponentially, by cleaning more of their money than he ever has before.

I'm enjoying this, but it feels to me that Jason Bateman seems noticeably miscast in his role. He exhibits intelligence and guile frequently, but never seems to project it as part of who he is - it all feels like it's written for him. But I'm still in, so it can't be that big a deal.

42 years ago today, we lost Alex Kintner. His fingers were only just starting to prune.

Also, RIP to his raft.

Never saw this until just now. I think this is just a walk on, after he was like the featured guest the year before.

And here's the Grudge Match between Bret and Will Sasso on Nitro. Youtube commenters correctly note that Sasso does a better job selling that most of WCW's roster at the time.

No reason for this, other than the fact that the official website for the film is still running, twenty-one years later.

Mid-90s website design ruled. (Best viewed on Netscape Navigator)

Anyone's wife/girlfriend making them sit through this?  :)

I kid, I kid - I think it's pretty good so far. Joseph Fiennes in this role looks like CM Punk.

Just caught this today, and enjoyed it. Anne Hathaway plays chronically drunk chick Gloria, who gets kicked out by her boyfriend and moves back into her childhood home in Upstate NY, then to reunite with childhood acquaintance Oscar (played by Jason Sudeikis). While there, she discovers she has an avatar in the form of a 100-foot monster, which, at 8:05am EST each morning, appears on a riverfront in Seoul, South Korea and wreaks (unintentional) havoc.

This was marketed as a fairly light-hearted comedy, but it actually takes a notably dark turn in the 2nd half, which is part of the reason I enjoyed it.

This is a very very basic question, but I don't own a smartphone, so I don't even know the correct jargon to know if I'm asking it the correct way, but here goes.

Let's say the iPhone is a "type of smartphone." Let's say the Android is another "type of smartphone." What are some other "types of smartphones" - analogous to the Android and anything which supports iOS?

No noble reason for this - I'm just trying to circumvent a reddit ban.   :fr:

General Discussion / Logan (2017)
« on: March 02, 2017, 01:02:27 PM »
Everyone's loving this in advance. Watching the trailers, I get the impression that there's a bunch of backstory I should be up to speed on before I sit down to watch this one. I've seen most, perhaps all of the X-Men/Wolverine films they've come out with, but I can't remember any important details. So, if anyone's got a few sentences explanation of how we got to bearded Logan driving around the desert with a half-dead Professor X in the backseat, feel free to hit me with it. Go ahead and spoil the previous movies for me, if necessary.

General Discussion / John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
« on: February 11, 2017, 07:26:20 PM »
Even more ridiculous than the last. I know to bitch about Keanu's acting is to beat the deadest horse in the Universe, but for some reason, I can't even buy him as a sour, brooding hitman. Nor is he as athletic as I'd expect him to be to keep up with all the bad guys. A couple of times, it seemed like he was moving in slow motion.

Anyway, Wick is pulled back into the assassination business, when an old acquaintance pays him a visit and demands he fulfill a blood oath to him. This sets off a chain reaction that leads to every hitman/woman on earth trying to kill him. Multiple headshots ensue.

If they make a third one, I will absolutely see it.

General Discussion / Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix)

Just started in on this. Tim Olyphant and Drew Barrymore are two boring, risk-averse realtors in Santa Clarita, CA. Then one day, Drew dies, then wakes up with no vital signs, but with a newfound zest for life.

An R-rated dark comedy. Half-hour episodes. Check it out.
