Doctor Strange (2016)
« on: November 04, 2016, 12:17:59 PM »
I've been excited for this ever since Cumberbatch's casting was announced.

I really enjoyed this. It's a lot smaller as a film than Civil War, but that's a good thing. It moves really fast, maybe too fast to be great, but still does enough to make you care for the characters and story.

It's funny because there's so much to compare superhero movies to this year alone. Deadpool and Civil War got it right in completely different ways. BvS and Suicide Squad had the right intentions but still isn't close to there yet. And Apocalypse just went backyards.

This one got it right and I have it just below Deadpool and Civil War depending on the day.

It's a pretty straight forward origin story we've seen before. Arrogant and gifted guy has to learn humility before he can earn his powers. Tony Stark and Thor both go through this in their films, except I felt they cast forwarded through his journey, a little bit.

It might have been a misstep in any other film, but the individual performances in this film really bring it up. Strange, Ancient One, Mordo, and Wong are played wonderfully by the respective actors.

And visually the movie is fantastic. Lots of comparisons to Inception will be made, but the visual effects team just takes what that film did further. Definitely should be seen on the big screen.

Only other weakness other than possibly rushing the pace of the film would be the underdeveloped generic villain. This is an on going thing with Marvel when not using Loki or Netflix, but you have a dream match between Sherlock and Hannibal and you don't do much with Mads Mikkelson, who has the acting chops to go against Cumberbatch.

Still a very enjoyable film, very different in tone and genre for the MCU, even if they're following a familiar formula now.

Looking forward to more Dr. Strange in the universe.

Going to see this with the family today. My son Stefan's name was inspired by Dr Strange I thought Stephen was pronounced that way. Was very disappointment when I found his name was Steven

DC just can't seem to make good movies, they should stick to TV

What's Apocalypse? I think I missed that

Loved it. Definitely up there with Civil War as best comic film of the year. Wong was a show stealer.

X-Men Apocalypse is good if you're not a huge fan of the comics, and if you have no expectations.  In a way, Apocalypse suffered more from the fact that the previous 2 movies were so much better.

I saw Doctor Strange and I gotta say, I was no more than satisfied.  It was visually stunning, and the action scenes were handled competently.  But everything else felt flat for me.  Most of the humour was bland and predictable, and actually detracted from the movie.  Aside from Tilda Swinton, I found the performances to be average.  The villain, whose name I never quite understood, was as forgettable as his name, with no clear motivations for his actions or any actual character development.  He is literally "Generic Villain #12" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I found the progression of Dr. Strange's abilities to be somewhat silly as well.  There is no clear indication of how long he was actually training in the mystic arts, and at first his training goes slowly like all montage scenes.  But there is a point where there is a sudden leap in his skills, and it's unclear whether that represented a significant passage of time, or a convenient sort of "he's the chosen one" cliche, like what happened with Rey in the Force Awakens.  Like SCB said, this portion of the movie seemed rushed.  Some more time spent in the monastery with Strange learning and practicing new spells would have been nice.  Along with some more backstory on the villain, either through flashbacks or conversations with Mordo.

My overall impression is that outside of the visual effects budget, this was Disney phoning it in with their standard superhero formula.  No risks were taken, and nothing new or memorable was introduced.  I enjoyed it, but I know that it could have been so much more.

Finally saw this.  It was better than I expected.   It did feel rushed at times.  I'm not too familiar with the Strange comics but I had a feeling Motto was important.  The acting was fantastic.

My only question was during a fight, bad guy takes Strange's ring but Strange opens a portal to save the Ancient One and his ring is back.  Do movies give no-prizes?

Logan movies that don't center around the X-Men tend to be good, imo, Days of Future Past being an exception.

The new one is supposed to be based on Old Man Logan, which is essentially for him what Dark Knight Returns was for Batman.  (Long since retired in a world that's somehow become worse then when he left it.

It's a good story in comic.  Some of the things would be downright hokey as a direct translation on the screen, like
Spoiler  :
redneck people eating Bruce Banner.
