Picking up: Are you supposed to tip.
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:21:34 PM »
If I'm ordering something from a diner or restaurant, and they have a spot on the reciept for a tip, I never pay it (In fact, I cross through it, as I heard that prevents them filling in whatever they want).

But last time, the lady behind the counter rolled her eyes at me.  Why?  All she does is hold onto the meal and check me out, there's no real service happening (If anyone deserves a tip, it's the cook.)

Am I wrong?

In some places (Starbucks being one example), the tips are distributed at an hourly rate to all the employees up to Shift Supervisor, so it's not all going to the person taking the order or operating the register. Not sure if that's common practice in other places providing carryout service.

I've never seen a Starbucks where people tip.

Maybe that's an out of CT thing?

Absolutely no tip, you just fucking went there to get it.

I look at the place and see if I am being helped by wait staff or a host.  In my area, hosts are paid full wages.   If it's wait staff, I give them a buck or two for their time.

lol I've been guilty of this, but like Pebble, I don't tip. At some point where do non-food places where people drive to get items get tipped too?

I read about an experiment a college professor did once, he put a tip jar on his desk and students actually contributed
I understand he gave the money back

My general rule is if I'm going to a place to sit down and eat and be served, I will tip.

Picking up Starbucks/pizza/take out: no.

I've been out of school not quite 15 years, and I continue to be amazed at how different things seem to be on campuses since I was there.

to be fair, I read this a few years ago, not sure when it happened - although I don't think that long

I've tipped on pickup or carryout, but I don't think it's required. To me, you're tipping for the service not the food being prepared so if all you do is hand me food, and I leave then no tip.

I used to tip when picking up when I was like...16...but quickly stopped doing that.  It's the same as ordering from McDonald's or any fast food chain.  Difference is it takes longer for your food to be ready and it's better food.  The reason the tip line is on there is they're printing the receipt through the same system that all receipts are printed.  They aren't adding it there themself it's there by default.

If you had someone roll their eyes at you because you didn't tip on a food pickup they're the problem.  Not you

That's what I'm saying RealMarchHare, we didn't get tipped at Burger King, not sure why Starbucks/Subway should be any different.
