The Orville (Fox)
« on: September 11, 2017, 04:01:19 AM »
Seth MacFarlane's new series - in the 25th century, he's assigned his first command as the captain a mid-level exploratory vessel.

This has a Star Trek: TNG vibe to it, and it's not the farcical comedy you might expect having seen his cartoon shows. This is actually pretty interesting and funny.

I liked it. I'm also facebook friends with one of the editors -  Tom Costantino.

If you're interested I belong to a discussion group for the show with Tom

Three episodes in - still solid. And I like that they don't seem to insist on delivering a happy ending to each episode, or having a goofy reveal (like episode 2).

I've heard good things, that it's not as silly as the trailers make it out to be. I guess I'll have to check it out before it gets cancelled gived Fox's history with sci-fi...

I like it.

The critics are being unfair, basically complaining when they were expecting poop jokes and got a sincere homage of a sci fi drama.

Even the obvious political bias doesn't bother me, because classic Trek was known for that, and Seth has been surprisingly even handed about it.

MacFarlane can't win with the critics. They pound him for his (often) juvenile sense of humor, and when he dials it down, they hit him again for not conforming to their expectations.

The guy can sing and tell a story, and it bothers people.

And some of the complaints from the nerdier Trek people sound suspiciously like ones leveled at Firefly.

The companion/high class prostitute with real political power/respect got argued up and down as being impossible/impractical, with a list of why societies couldn't ever develop such a profession under capitalism.  Different but simlarly nitpicky arguments are being leveled at an all male society, and how they felt it didn't measure up to Trek standards..

Of course, Firefly wasn't up to "Trek standards" either, and glossed over a lot of things about their universe in favor of the character interactions..  Which was the point.  The characters and the drama, with the universe as just a backdrop for that instead some ridiculously details Star Wars abomonation that becomes its own thing..

3 episodes in I'm still liking it, more than I expected to

I honestly might not have even checked it out if I didn't "know" someone working on the show

I really liked it.

The time travel thing reminds me of Chrisopher Priest's work on The Ray (Writer most known for Black Panther.)

Basically, this kid who can transform into an energy being is raised by as asshole superhero father that's way too hard on him. So he ends up going back in time accidentially, and assumes his dad has something to do with it, recklessly confronts him and scares the crap out of him, accidentially gives him his powers, which he uses to fight the nazi's.  The kid confronts him again and begs him not to screw with time, and his younger old man just tears into him:  "THIS ISN'T HISTORY TO ME, YOU DUMBASS!  If you screwed up time, THAT'S ON YOU."

And suddenly his father being a jerk all his life makes perfect sense.
