or his friend is in on it, or he faked the call to further the hoax

Those possibilities seem less likely to me.

Not really. I just have an admitted bias towards the less complicated explanation. If Te'o's friend is in on this, and invented this story of being there 9 months ago when Te'o received the phone call updating "Lennay's" condition, it would mean he's injecting himself into this story (and bearing the intense scrutiny that comes with that) to defend a guy who's either going to come out of this looking like the world's biggest mark, or a total con-man. This prompts the question of why he'd do such a thing, unless he was telling the truth and thought he needed to do the right thing.

Likewise, if Te'o was conning everybody from the beginning, why make any special effort to convince this one guy of anything? Is he really thinking that far ahead - "Hey, if this all falls apart down the line, I'll have this guy to vouch for me"? Nevermind the fact that there's no guarantee this guy would ever go to bat for him in that situation, it's just bad strategy on Te'o's part. It is, simultaneously, a stupid way to orchestrate a con-job, and, if it ended up working, evidence of a mind with more vision than anyone's ever seen.

I get where you're coming from, I'm a fan of Occam's razor myself. Maybe it's just my innate distrust of athletes, I just don't believe this guy is innocent in this

I don't think Te'o is that smart to orchestrate the hoax/scam. I could be wrong, but most athletes are very stupid people. If he were any smarter to make a hoax girlfriend, then claim that she died the same day as his grandmother AND he got a phone call from the hoax girlfriend who is now alive, would he be playing football?

What comes of this is that Te'o looks to be a liability in any profession (NFL or otherwise).

You are basing the idea that "most athletes are very stupid people" on what exactly?

It was damn stupid. Too many loose ends present to say he was innocent the whole time.

He either lied about her death because the truth is it's some dirty old man lying to him.
Or maybe the girl was real just not the pic he thought and said she was dead to save face about being too superficial for her.

First hand experience, but I also knew athletes that were very intelligent and well-rounded beyond athletics (like a friend of mine from high school who played baseball, but was on the academic/quiz bowl team too).

I agree that not all stereo typical jocks are brain dead, but it doesn't qualify them to be skilled critical thinkers. Simple hoax is a simple hoax until it blows up in one's face.

I still say anyone is intelligent enough to attempt a fake relationship, but obviously in this case not smart enough to pull it off without a hitch. It's too damn easy for football fans to support the "idiot" defense. Which makes it also too damn easy for this jerk to pull it for his defense.

I don't see anyone using an idiot defense to defend Te'o.  I've heard naive, but not idiot.

Ok, I retract it, but the idea still stands. Nievity or ignorance is what he's placating for his defense.

As it stands right now, the most concrete evidence of Te'o's complicity isn't concrete at all. It exists in the argument that nobody could be that naive or gullible for that long - therefore, he must have been in on it.

I think this is specious reasoning, however - and I think I can demonstrate how. Imagine that Manti Te'o wasn't the starting MLB for the University of Notre Dame, as well as the most decorated defensive player in the history of college football. Imagine he was just some guy we had never heard until news of this hoax broke. Would we be so quick to assume complicity in that case? If they guy had been living in a trailer park instead of Dillon Hall at Notre Dame, would we assume his guilt a little less quickly?

If it appears I'm making an overtly classist argument, that's part of my point. I think people are reflexively assuming a level of intelligence on Te'o that could easily be overestimated, and at any rate, should be demonstrated rather than affirmed. Think of what kind of factory schools become when sports like football and basketball are concerned. It's almost always taken as a matter of certain fact that big time college athletes are gaming the system in some way. Not going to classes, not taking tests, not writing papers. In Peyton Manning's second pro season, Sports Illustrated published an article detailing, among other things - just what an idiot he was - not knowing how to open a can of soup, or even heat one up. In a world where athletic prowess is so prized, it wouldn't shock me to see normal critical thinking skills given less of an emphasis.

To me, the best argument for Te'o's basic innocence is the currently ticking clock. It's been 5 days since this story broke. Te'o's story is that he was duped by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo with the help of at least one or two other people. All we've heard from Tuisasosopo (through family surrogates) is that his family is meeting later this week just to discuss how they should address his role in the hoax. Just to discuss that. In the meantime, Te'o will be doing an on-camera interview with Katie Couric where he's guaranteed to repeat (if not offer more compelling evidence) that RT was the hoax's mastermind, and that he had no part in executing it.

If Te'o was complicit in the hoax, and I'm Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, I don't see any percentage in sitting on my hands and letting Te'o do all the talking. He's already outed me, trying to shred whatever reputation I ever had. I'm certain to have at least as much (if not more) proof of Te'o's complicity (emails, texts, etc.) as Te'o claims to have of his innocence. If I can prove his guilt, nobody's going to write songs about me, but I won't come out of this shit-storm nearly as bad-off as Te'o will.

Lying about Te'o's complicity probably opens RT up to defamation lawsuit. But saying nothing for this long gives us a different picture of who's got something to feel guilty about, IMO.

It gets weirder and weirder. Apparently, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was the voice for "Lennay Kekua." There's something deeply disturbing about Tuiasosopo AND Te'o. If you're a guy and you're talking to someone you think is a woman, wouldn't you pick up on the fact that the person you're talking to may or may not be a girl? It's really tough for a guy to sound like a girl on the phone most of the time. Te'o can't be that stupid....can he? He had to at least on SOME level pick up on the fact that "Kekua" may be a dude or may not be who he thinks she is. Also, if Te'o is gay, there's no shame in him saying he is (well, he is playing football and that seems to be a touchy subject for football players).

People have said though from the tapes released that it's not likely that Ronaiah was the voice.  I still think his female cousin was involved.

To that end...

Tuiasosopo apparently told Dr. Phil he had romantic feelings for Te'o and that Te'o was an innocent victim in the hoax.

I'm starting to think Te'o was or at least found out about it very quickly. I also wonder if Te'o is actually gay and invented the 'girlfriend' story to fool his parents and everyone else.

It actually is very easy to get mistaken for a girl on the phone.  Working in a call center you wouldn't believe the amount of times I get a customer one of my co-workers was just talking to and the customer opens with "Hi, I was just speaking with one of your female co-workers," and I look at the case and he was just talking to one of my male co-workers.
